Doing up the nursery for baby number 2 has been a mission but one that I have been passionate about seeing through, even when with issues such as carpet sizes being wrong, uneven walls, a tricky shelving unit and an eager three-year-old who wanted to add his own touches to the walls!

A Nautical Themed Nursery

I remember that a few years ago the nautical theme had really taken to the shops and it’s a look I have always loved. When we found out that we were going to be having another boy I knew straight away that this was the style I wanted for the gloomy room upstairs as it has definitely been in need of a new lease of life and if you have been following my progress you will know that I have already upcycled the furniture and made my own nautical themed canvasses.

After finally picking a shade of blue that I was happy with and waiting for a new carpet to be laid the room was ready for the best part; adding those fantastic final touches! Unfortunately, the shops are really lacking in the nautical theme at the moment but luckily for me, I found plenty of gems on the internet.

Nautical Themed Products

Whale Blanket

The stunning whale dream blanket is from Aden + Anais for £44.95 and is perfect for those chilly evenings or for swaddling. It is so large (120cm x 120cm) that it is ideal for using on the floor as a playmat or as I have done, placed over a chair ready for those winter nights when I am up doing a feed and need to keep myself and the baby warm. It is incredibly soft due to the four layers of 100% cotton muslin that was used to produce it and is machine washable which is perfect when you have a newborn!

This website also has fantastic muslins to match… I know what’s next on my wishlist!

Baby Sleeping Bag

This adorable sleeping bag was actually completely designed by me can you believe?!… Well, I can’t take credit for the image but I did source it via stock images and applied it to the website Bags of Love who specialise in personalised gifts. As long as your image fits their standard required you will be fine using any of your own. You simply upload your photo, align it to the position you require and then move on to pick which colours you would like on the remainder of your sleeping bag. I chose light blue to fit in with the rest of the theme. The website was very easy to use too and my item was created quickly and efficiently plus it arrived in good time. Prices start from £35 depending on your chosen style.

The bag itself is designed for up to 6 months and is very snuggly inside which will be perfect come January/February.

Narwahl Crochet Rattle

This crochet rattle is just adorable and I knew it would be a great fit with the nautical theme. It is handmade from 100% cotton yarn in Bangladesh and meets all the fairtrade standards, and of course safety standards. It can even be popped into the washing machine! This happy little chap is soft and light so can be easily handled by a baby and is available to purchase from Borngifted for £8.99. I’m pretty sure we will have a plenty of fun with him!

So, that’s his cot all sorted…

Origami Ships

The origami ships in the play area are handmade by Fiona from Folded Heart. When she heard that I was looking for nautical items she immediately began to send me ideas for what she could make to add to the look. I was overwhelmed by her passion for her craft and no sooner had I chosen these gorgeous ships, she set to work on them and had them completed by the end of the day!

Fiona can create so many fabulous items and personalise gifts for your loved ones, just get in touch with her to see what she can create for you or your home.

The Other Touches

The stunning handmade light shades, whale rug, shelves and striped bag were all sourced from eBay… one of my favourite places to grab a bargain!

The wooden organiser was made by myself. I bought a plain wooden box from eBay, painted it with tester paint I had left over and used stencils for the design. I also made the canvas pictures you can see on the wall.

These stunning items have transformed what could be a boring blue room into my ideal nautical themed nursery. Now we just need to wait for our little arrival to enjoy it too.
