How to Make the Most Out of a Trip to the Amalfi Coast

Since the Roman times, the Amalfi Coast and its three islands – Procida, Ischia and Capri – have been a must-visit for many travellers.

Surrounded by tall mountains, the coastal towns in this area remain largely unspoilt, being a culinary, artistic and scenic delight. Visitors come to the area in their droves during the warmer summer months, so if you want to avoid the crowds it’s a good idea to visit out of season.

Here are some more top tips on how to make the most out of your trip to the Amalfi Coast:

Choosing When and Where to Stay

From November to Easter, the majority of attractions, restaurants and hotels are closed along the Amalfi Coast. But, as mentioned previously, the same cannot be said of July and August when the temperatures soar and the narrow roads become gridlocked.

That’s why spring and autumn are your best bet, and will still provide you with jaw-dropping scenery around every corner. Autumn is renowned for its bountiful produce and warm seas while spring is the time the wildflowers come into their own.

To see all of the major highlights of the region, you’ll need about five days in total. It’s worth staying for at least one night on Ischia, dividing the rest of your time between the other areas. And you’ll also want to take some day trips to the mountains, Ravello’s gardens and Pompeii.

Always book ahead, especially if you are going in the summer.

Getting There and Getting Around

The majority of people will fly into Naples – but if you want to add a romantic twist to your holiday, you might want to take an overnight train from a European city.

If you fancy exploring the area by car be aware that this can be quite a hairy experience. That’s why, if you’re not a confident driver (or passenger), hiring a driver or getting from A to B by public transport may be better.

There are also a vast array of ferries that connect the Amalfi Coast’s towns with Capri, Sorrento and Salerno. You can also get to Procida, Ischia and Naples from Capri or Sorrento.

Making the Most of Your Visit

As well as visiting all of the must-see places, you might also want to add an extra-special touch to the trip by hiring a boat (nothing beats seeing the Amalfi Coast from the sea), swimming off the thermal beaches of Ischia and eating the seafood that’s revered in this area (spaghetti with fresh clams and tuna from Cetara).

As you can see, any holiday to this stunning region of Italy will be jam-packed full of things to do with breath-taking views around every corner.
