Many families reach a point where they know it’s time to move from their existing home. Whether you’re running out of space, wish to switch from renting to homeownership, or want to make the next financially-savvy move up the property ladder, the knowledge that you need to move is not always enough. You may find that you hesitate, torn between the basic need and a number of complicating factors that make you want to stay where you are.

Below, we have listed three of the most common reasons people resist moving house, even when they know it’s likely to be the best choice for their family. In addition, we’ve also detailed how you can overcome these concerns, so you and your family can move onwards and upwards…

Concern about leaving the neighbourhood

If you currently live in a pleasant neighbourhood with family and friends nearby, the idea of leaving can feel almost impossible. You have put down roots, established yourself in the community, and the idea of starting over somewhere new can feel hugely intimidating.

To overcome this, it’s worth remembering that moving home does not mean losing touch with your own neighbourhood. It’s easier to stay in touch with people than ever thanks to social media, and you can visit whenever you wish.

Finding the idea of buying another property stressful

Buying a property can be extremely worrying. After all, your home is likely to be the most expensive thing you ever purchase, so it’s important to ensure you are 100% happy with the decision. The desire to make sure this process is as smooth as possible can mean a long period of house hunting, scanning lists of useful tips when home-buying to ensure you don’t make any mistakes, and endless hours spent worrying about making such a huge decision.

If you are already a homeowner, then you will know – all too well – how tough it can be to find and purchase the right property for you; and this can mean you’re reticent to go through the same experience again. If you’re still renting, then even just contemplating the idea of such a large purchase can cause a very real fear of the unknown, to the point where renting begins to look like a preferable choice (even when you know it isn’t really).

In truth, you can’t so much overcome these fears,- but you can acknowledge that your diligence will likely result in a better life for you and your family. It’s a simple principle of short-term pain for long-term gain; it’s not easy, but it is worth it.

Losing memories

Many parents are distressed at the idea of moving house due to fear regarding a loss of memories. Saying goodbye to the property that you brought your baby to for the first time, where you have watched them grow and change – it’s incredibly difficult, and such fears can be severe enough to make you want to stay put.

If you are struggling with this, then it’s important to remember that memories aren’t held in a place; they’re in your mind. Yes, they took place at a physical location, but the memories you are cherishing are about your children, not the place itself – and there are plenty more memories waiting to be made in your next home.

In conclusion

If you have thought that moving house would be a good step for your family, but resisted for the aforementioned reasons, then hopefully the thoughts above will help ease your fears. Good luck.
