What to Do in London this Winter

Although the summer months are often favoured when it comes to planning days out, winter brings its own unique range of exciting events and activities that the whole family can enjoy.

In London, there is always something new just waiting to be discovered, ranging from culture and history-based trips to foodie adventures and music, arts or sporting events. Compared to the warmer months of the year, the capital should be quieter during the winter without so many tourists – the perfect time to plan a day trip! London is so easily accessible via train but if you are further afield why not think about what flights to London are available. It could be great fun for the whole family and will also get you there in no time!

Here are some great ideas of events, activities and more to keep you entertained on a visit to London this winter.

Exploring Landmarks… Without the Crowds!

Whether it’s Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London or one of the city’s many impressive museums, take the opportunity to visit some of the most famous landmarks in the capital outside of the peak tourist season. Of course, there are still likely to be crowded, but they will be nothing in comparison to the hustle and bustle of a summer visit if you visit in the winter.

Get a Different View of London

Wait for a clear day then get a bird’s eye view of the city streets from the London Eye or the View from the Shard. If you’re bringing the family, don’t forget to point out some of the most famous landmarks! Alternatively, you could explore below the ground on a tour of some of London’s fascinating abandoned tube stations.

Go Ice Skating

What could be more traditional than ice-skating at Christmas? Seasonal open-air ice rinks always pop up all over the city during the winter, so do some research and visit one that takes your fancy.

Visit Hogwarts in the Snow

Perfect for young and old alike, fans of Harry Potter will not want to miss a chance to see the iconic film sets dressed for winter. From the original Yule Ball props to the Great Hall at Christmas, embrace the spirit of Harry’s wonderful world at the most magical time of the year.

Wonderful Winter Walks

The weather may be colder, but that’s no reason to stay indoors! Experience some of the capital’s best winter landscapes on a walk – the perfect way to burn off some of those Christmas calories! Go deer-spotting in Richmond Park or check out the gorgeous lights at Christmas at Kew.

Comfort Food

Escape the cold weather and hole up in a cosy café or restaurant this winter. Indulge in some delicious comfort food to keep you warm or alternatively, go for afternoon tea for something a little extra special.

Classic Theatre Trip

From ever-popular favourites like Les Misérables, Wicked, The Lion King and the Phantom of the Opera to brand-new productions, London’s West End is home to a great selection of outstanding shows. Why not bring the whole family along to a matinee performance and introduce the kids to the world of theatre with tickets to a family-friendly show like School of Rock, Aladdin or Matilda the Musical.

New Year’s Eve Fireworks

Head down to the capital on New Year’s Eve and take the opportunity to see in the New Year by joining the crowds lining the banks of the River Thames to watch the iconic annual fireworks display. Make sure to get there early to guarantee a good view!
