Statistics tell us that on average, most people in the UK will spend 11 long hours cleaning their homes for spring. Although it seems for some, it is normal to dedicate entire weeks to the process, with some people looking to create entire transformations in time for the sunnier, fresher weather heading our way.

So, if you are in that dedicated crowd who really do enjoy and even look forward to whiling away the hours transforming their homes, then we salute you and we will probably enjoy spending a lot of time at your gorgeous homes this summer.

Those of you who cannot stand cleaning and really don’t want to spend much hard-earned cash on straightening their place up, don’t fret, you’re in good company too. Even better, we can make this process even more convenient and stress-free for you. Sorry, no, we aren’t hiring a cleaner for you but as second best, how about some easy-to-read tips on how to spring clean your house cheap and fast.

You Can Spring-clean Your Home For Less With These Tips

There is no need for cleaning or decorating to cost the earth, especially when it is for the purpose of a spring refresh. When you’re making a house look nicer for resale or you’re fully renovating, of course, you need to invest both time and money. But for a spring clean? You really can save the pennies, especially with these tips:

Declutter

It sounds way too simple and yet, it is the easiest way to transform a home, and it is free! Grab your bin bags, grab your boxes and start filtering through each and every belonging that you have so that you end up only with the items you really love. Utilise The Cheapest Cleaning Products

There are super cheap chemical cleaning products but they aren’t very effective and they are so bad for the air in your home and the environment. Instead, for an equally cheap but way more eco-friendly and effective option try using:

  • Lemon to clean stainless steel
  • Vanilla extract in a mug, bake for one hour for instant delicious house-scent
  • White wine vinegar, essential oil and water microwaved for five minutes to steam the dirt off
  • Full-fat cola down the toilet for the night to eat away all the grime
  • Baking soda in the bin to absorb odours
  • White vinegar in a spray bottle applied to weeds before a sunny day to stop them taking in moisture, eventually killing them with re-application. Check out my recipe here

Practise Feng Shui

Feng Shui is all about where you place things. With a few rearrangements and repositioning of your furniture, your house could have a fresher, cleaner vibe. Take a look at this beginners Feng Shui guide to get started.

Get Some Plants

According to statistics, indoor air quality can have a huge influence on your health. Did you know that poor indoor air quality can increase your risk of a stroke by over 30%? Plants are a quick way to purify the air and freshen up the look and feel of your home. Even better, they are cheap! A quick and easy way to get your home spring ready, in as little as a trip to the local supermarket, or garden centre if you want a full selection to choose from.

Make It A Friend/Family Affair

Make a pact with a friend to have a cleaning day where you go to their house and help them clean whilst you put on some music and have a catch-up, as long as they come and do the same at your house. Or, get the whole family involved in a spring clean, making it into a fun task (you may have to create a reward for the kids!). You don’t have to do it all on your own.

Just Do One Room

If you’re looking to make a real difference, why not take the pressure off and focus on one room at a time? Maybe your home is fresh and clean anyway, but you’d like somewhere that is looking tired to feel a bit more modern ready for spring. For example, maybe you have always wanted to properly do-up the guest bedroom, adding a lovely ensuite and follow a full-colour scheme, and this summer the family from Australia is coming to stay.

Now is the perfect time to freshen up that room, putting all your energy into that space so you know you’ve enhanced the space you really wanted to, rather than stretching your resources across the whole house and never really making any progress.

Focus On What You Can Afford

If you start cleaning and trying to redecorate your house, suddenly a £10 trip to Wilko turns into a £100 pound trip to B&Q for paints, rollers and everything else. Instead, if you do want to do a little to your house over a weekend for spring, prioritise the most important jobs or, jobs you know will cost very little, or that you already have the equipment for. Don’t fall victim to the pressure of the Jones’s up the road, spring clean the best way for your home.

The objective of cleaning is not just to clean, but to feel happiness living within that environment. – Marie Kondo

Spring cleaning can often feel like a competition with the rest of the street. You proudly look at your freshly washed garage door that took you an hour to clean, just as you glance across the road and see Bob from number 35 has had an entirely new garage door, and new drive and his lawn looks great too. There will always be a house fresher, cleaner and more done-up than yours. Focus on your own house, your own spring cleaning goals, and on the happy environment you want to create, and you’ll find there’s no need for your process to cost much money at all because money doesn’t guarantee the kind of results you really want.

  1. These are great tips! I usually do my spring cleaning one room at a time, for a few hours each weekend, so I love that tip! Last weekend I focused on my living room. I organized all of the clutter, had the furniture cleaned (the one thing I pay a professional to do because I don’t want to ruin it!), cleaned the blinds, windows, and walls, etc. It only took a couple of hours and now the room is nice and clean for us to enjoy! Next weekend I’ll tackle the kitchen. This helps us get everything done without spending 11 hours straight cleaning!

  2. Thanks for the great tips! I don’t usually have a specific schedule when it comes to cleaning but this year I want to try it out. I noticed a stain keeps coming back and I found this great post about how to make sure the stains stay away. Keep up the posts and tips!
