There are times in life where you have to take other people into account. No longer can you solely focus on looking after your own health, you have to think about others too. This happens when you become parents for the first time and have a little one to look after. You do everything to ensure they remain in good health, they’re your responsibility.
However, you can’t forget about those people that used to care and look after your health when you were young. Your parents will get to a stage in their life where they become too old to really look after themselves. They may develop various health problems and need assistance. Seeing as you were once their responsibility, it only seems right to repay the favour.
As such, I’ve constructed a helpful little guide to help you care for elderly parents with health problems.
Keep Their Medication Organised
Anyone that looks after their parents will tell you they have a whole cupboard full of medication. The older you get, the more things you need to take. These can often be supplements for things they no longer get enough of, or they could be medication for health issues. Either way, there are so many things to be wary of, and you need to keep it all organised for them. I’ve heard that medication packs can help you manage your medication by giving you little sections to put certain pills. You can separate your parent’s medication into different days of the week or periods in the day. This ensures they take exactly what they need to at the right time. It prevents wrongful ingestion of anything and can help keep your parents healthy.
Hire A Helper
Understandably, you can’t be with your parents 24/7. But, they still might need assistance with regular daily tasks. In this case, the best thing to do is hire a helper. You can get a carer to come to your parents home and stay with them for a few hours every day. They can help prepare lunch for them, do chores around the house, or just provide company and assistance. It’s always better to choose this option instead of putting your parents into a nursing home. While a nursing home will provide them with 24/7 support and care, they can often be very expensive. Plus, they completely take away any sense of independence your parent might have, which will make them feel bad about themselves and they won’t be happy.
Make Sure They Get Plenty Of Fresh Air
You’ll be surprised at how much your parents can benefit from getting fresh air. A lot of elderly people are almost trapped inside their house as they don’t have a way of going out on their own. This isn’t good for them, it’s good to go out and be active. Even if it simply means going for a walk around your garden or down the road and back. The fresh air will do them a world of good, and they’ll enjoy being outside the house too. If your parent is in a wheelchair then obviously they can’t be active but they will still benefit from being out in the open. If they have other problems that mean they need walking assistance, then you have to be patient as they’ll be moving slower than you.
Keep Emergency Numbers On Speed Dial
It’s very important that you’re prepared for things before they happen. If one of your parents takes a turn for the worse, you need to call up their doctor or another health service as quickly as possible. No time can be wasted, you need to get the right medical advice right there and then. As such, you should store all the emergency numbers you need on speed dial on your phone. This means you can dial who you need at the click of a button. The few seconds or minutes you spare could make a whole load of difference.
There’s no denying that looking after your parents is a big task. If anything, it’s harder to keep them in good health than your newborn child! Alas, in life, what goes around comes around. You were once their child, and they looked after you when you had any health problems. Now, you’re looking after them just like your baby will do to you in 70 or so years. What’s important is that you still look after your own health amidst everything else too. Keep up with your exercise routines, eat healthily, and stay fit.
