How Cloth Nappies Are More Convenient And Beneficial For Both You And Baby

When cloth nappies are talked or written about, the most common viewpoint for using them is an environmental one. Yes, this is a huge plus point for using cloth over disposable but I have started to worry that by focussing a lot of energy on this side that we are inadvertently missing a new consumer. You see, not everybody is as passionate about the environment and no matter how much you and I bang on about 500 years, plastic waste, crude oil and water use, it may actually turn some people off. We all have different lives, we all have different routines, children and opinions and so, I wanted to take a different stance on the benefits of cloth nappies… One that does not mention the environment or saving the planet. This is about how cloth nappies are more convenient and beneficial for both you and baby. How cloth can actually make life easier, healthier, simpler. Yes, I believe all of those things to be true, as did my lovely cloth bum mama’s over on Instagram who helped to give many ideas for this blog. So, let’s take a look at the most popular reasons why cloth is convenient and beneficial…

How To Get A Reluctant Dad On Board With Cloth Nappies

When it comes to making that leap from disposable nappies to cloth nappies, you won’t be surprised to hear that the ones who usually instigate this change are the Mums. You also won’t be surprised to hear that getting Dad on board with cloth nappies can be quite tricky. And this isn’t because men don’t care as much about the environment or about not having chemicals next to their baby’s skin, it is usually just simply because they tend to tackle things in a slightly different way. Men like facts and figures, they like to see the costs, they want to know that the change is going to benefit them and be worthwhile in the long term.

Popper or Velcro Cloth Nappies?

The popularity of cloth nappies is clearly growing and for me, this is a great sign! I love seeing more parents showing off their latest prints, their babies fluff bums and yelling at the top of their voices about helping the planet. It is such a step in the right direction. Of course, with this new interest comes plenty of questions and those questions are always good. Never ever think that a cloth nappy question is stupid because if you are asking it, you have a reason for that and if one person can answer it quickly and easily for you, that may help to keep you on the cloth nappy path and prevent you from reverting back to disposables. I’ve answered a lot of the usual cloth nappy questions here (washing, myths, costs etc) but this post is going to cover whether you should you go for popper or velcro cloth nappies.

Using Cloth Nappies on Holiday

When it comes to using cloth nappies, I use them full-time for my son so when I go on holiday I personally don’t see why that would change. For me, this is my routine. William wears cloth nappies, not disposables (anymore) and so far since using reusables, each of my holidays or trips has allowed for that to continue. Here’s how I use cloth nappies whilst on holiday…

Affordable Ways To Get You Started With Cloth Nappies

Starting out with cloth nappies can seem daunting for quite a few reasons and one that comes up most often (other than washing) is the initial set-up cost. Yep, I get that. When I first started looking at cloth I did what most people do and gasped at some of the prices. I wondered how on earth I’d be able to afford to buy enough to use cloth full-time and worried that I would spend out lots of money only for it not to work for us. I think the majority of us cloth nappy parents have thought all of these things at the beginning so I promise that you are not alone.

Where Do I Start With Cloth Nappies?

“Where do I start with cloth nappies?” is the most common question I get asked and to be honest it is actually a bit of a tough one to answer because every baby and child is different and working out what works for you will depend on them, your routine, whether or not you want to cloth full-time and what brands you prefer. What I can most definitely help with is clearing up some of the areas that seem daunting and confusing.

How To Wash Cloth Nappies

One of the biggest worries when thinking about making the switch from single-use nappies to reusable nappies is the washing. Most parents gasp at the thought of more laundry loads each week, a lot of people imagine that I must be scrubbing my cloth nappies to get the stains out or that they need soaking in a bath for days prior to going into the machine. I promise you this much, none of this is true. There is nothing difficult about using and washing cloth nappies, they are no different from clothes and you will not need to be tackling it every day either. In fact, I find using and washing my reusables a joy.
