How to Create a Stylish Yet Kid-Friendly Living Room in a Small Space

*Collaborative Post
Hello lovely mums (and dads)! As a mum, I totally understand the constant battle for space in any small home. Especially in the living room, which is probably the most used room by everyone. It’s where we come together as a family, where we relax, play, do homework, and where we entertain our guests. So how exactly do we steer clear of the chaos and create both a stylish and kid-friendly living room in a tight area? I’ve put together a couple of ideas that may hopefully inspire you!
Focus on Storage
Let’s face it; kids come with a lot of stuff! Everything, from cuddly toys to craft supplies, can make your living room look like a toy store explosion. One solution I found is to incorporate smart storage. In my family, we use pretty wicker baskets that complement our decor and easily stash away all the clutter when guests arrive. Another fabulous yet stylish solution that we discovered is using hexagon photo tiles on the walls. They’re aesthetically pleasing, and if you fix a small shelf below them, they can serve as a bookshelf or a storage spot for all those small but important things.
Dual-Purpose Furniture
Investing in dual-purpose furniture can be a game-changer in a small living room. Think about ottomans that open up to store toys or an attractive coffee table with spacious drawers. Similarly, a nice, sturdy bookshelf against one wall can hold more than just books. It can store those art and craft boxes, board games, or even be a display shelf for your little Picasso’s art.
Choosing Child-Friendly Materials
A stylish living room doesn’t mean you have to compromise on child-friendly materials. Opt for a leather sofa; it’s durable and easy to clean, making it an ideal choice for homes with kids. If you prefer fabric furniture, choosing stain-resistant and washable covers will go a long way in maintaining the freshness and appeal of your living room.
Art Corner
Let’s be honest, your little artist needs a place to express their creativity but a small room means we have to get creative too. Wall decals may be one of my favourite ways to do so! They come in a plethora of designs to match any style you’re aiming for, and the best bit? They’re completely removable and won’t leave any stains behind!
Accent Rugs
Accent rugs don’t only add pattern, texture and colour, they also provide a safe place for little ones to play. My tip would be to choose a rug that’s easy to clean and durable.
Colour Play
Just because it’s a shared space doesn’t mean you have to stick to a safe neutral palette. Kids love colours! You can diffuse pops of your children’s favourite colours subtly through throw pillows, lampshades or even the photo frames. You’ll be surprised how these tiny additions can light up your small living room making it warm and inviting.
At the end of the day, your living room will always be a place for relaxation and family bonding, irrespective of its size. I’ve learned to embrace the joyful chaos of having young kids and reflect it in my home. After all, it’s about creating a space that’s comfortable and enjoyable for all. So, my fellow mums (and dads), here’s encouraging you to not let the size of your living room limit your style or kid-friendliness. With smart strategies and solutions, you can have the best of both worlds.
Hope you find these tips helpful, and as always, happy parenting! Don’t forget to enjoy every moment because they grow up so fast!
