Plumbing emergencies can prove to be a real nightmare, putting your routine and comfort on hold, and sometimes requiring a significant chunk off your budget to fix. Having the knowledge to conduct simple checks can help you prevent plumbing disasters.

Understanding Plumbing Basics

Plumbing issues may inevitably happen, no matter how well maintained your household is. It is therefore helpful, to not only find a local plumber, but also acquire some basic knowledge about the plumbing system in your home. Knowing how your house’s plumbing works and where the main shut-off valve is, can be a lifesaver during an emergency. Additionally, understanding the basics can help you identify simple issues that you can potentially fix yourself.

Pipe Checks

One of the major threats to your plumbing system is water leaks. Regularly examine visible pipes in and around your house. Look out for corrosion, moisture on or around the pipe and leaks. Also, listen out for unfamiliar noises when you use your taps, this may indicate a problem deep within the systems. Regular pipe checks can save you significant trouble and expense in the long run.

Identifying Emerging Drain Blockages

Clogged drains are a common problem that many households face. Watch for signs such as water draining slowly, unpleasant odours, or gurgling sounds. These might indicate a need for an emergency drain unblocking. The simplest way to avoid this is by being mindful of what goes down your drain; avoid oils, non-soluble materials and bulk food waste.

Checking Taps and Showers

Constantly dripping taps or showers not only waste water but might also indicate a bigger underlying problem. Ensure all taps and showerheads in your home are working correctly. Fix leaks promptly to prevent further damage and save on your water bills.

Detecting Toilet Issues

Toilet plumbing issues, left unchecked, can lead to very unsanitary situations. Regularly check your toilets for any signs of leaking. Also, if you have to constantly run the water in your toilet, it might mean that some parts are worn out and need replacement. Ensure the mechanism inside your toilet cistern is working efficiently. If necessary, replace any parts that are worn out.

Understanding Water Pressure

Low water pressure can be frustrating when you’re trying to get things done. It might also indicate a plumbing problem, such as a pipe leak or build-up of sediment. Check your water pressure from time to time. If you notice a sudden drop in pressure, call in a professional to check your system.

Insulating Pipes

During the colder seasons, exposed pipes may freeze and possibly burst, leading to a plumbing disaster. Insulate your pipes with foam tubes to prevent this. For pipes in unheated areas like the garage or outdoor areas, consider using heated tape for extra protection.

Maintaining your Water Heater

Regular maintenance of your water heater can prevent problems such as leaks or inefficiency. Check for signs of corrosion or leaks. If your water heater is ageing, it might be cost-effective to replace it before a more significant issue arises.

Conclusion

These simple checks, done regularly, can go a long way in preventing plumbing emergencies. Equipped with this knowledge, not only will you be more prepared for potential problems, but you may even prevent some of them! Moreover, it should give you the peace of mind you deserve, knowing that you’re doing your best to keep on top of your household maintenance, and preventing the need for costly repairs. But remember, in case of a severe issue, don’t hesitate to call in a professional!
