Training For The Three Peaks – Month Four

This was it, the final month before the big climb, and guess what? Yep, my leg WAS injured from my hike – if you’re not sure what I am talking about, you can go back and read month three’s update here. This, unfortunately, meant that all training had to stop, leaving me worried for my leg and even more worried that I wouldn’t be able to do the challenge at all. The one thing I was dreading and the last thing I wanted to happen.
Getting Back To My Best
I began by deciding to rest my leg as much as possible, massage where it felt tight, use a foam roller on the tricky spots and gently stretch, but it just wasn’t enough. The pain slowly became worse, spreading to my ankle and foot, making walking even short distances agony. So I did the sensible thing and sought help from my sports massage therapist, Jamie Venning, who, after a thorough check, found several issues – not what I wanted to hear. He quickly set to work on loosening my ankle, improving mobility, easing pain and taping my leg to provide some relief and to also correct the positioning of my ankle/foot. It immediately felt better and I was relieved I’d made that call. I still couldn’t do full on training but I managed gentle dog walks as keeping mobile now seemed to help with the pain.
After a couple more weeks, I was still experiencing twinges and tightness in my muscles and I really wasn’t sure if I would even be going to Scotland but I paid Jamie another visit and he worked some more magic on my leg. This time it felt even better and he gave me the go ahead to attempt The Three Peaks.
Short and Sweet
A very short and sweet blog this time but I wanted to make sure I documented everything to show that this challenge is hard from the moment you decide to take it on. Not training for it would be very risky but training for it can also bring risks, and this is why putting a fitness plan in place, listening to your body and seeking professional care and expertise are all essential.
Stay tuned for the last instalment – the challenge itself!! You’ll not want to miss it because it was a very eventful adventure…
