3 Simple Ways To Reduce Energy Usage On A Laptop
*Collaborative Post
Spending hours a day working on a laptop can result in mass amounts of energy usage in your home. When you add up all the hours you work throughout the year, your carbon footprint could be pretty worrying. This begs the question, is it possible to reduce energy usage from your laptop?
You’ll be happy to know the answer is a resounding yes. Carry on reading this post, and you will find three very simple and effective ways to make your laptop use less energy every single day:
Keep it unplugged as long as possible
Your laptop will only consume energy if it is plugged into the mains. The beauty of a laptop is that it doesn’t need to be plugged in to work. Unlike a computer, you can unplug it and use the internal battery. Do this as often as possible – you should only ever plug your laptop in when it is on 0% battery.
If you have a laptop with good battery life, you can spend hours a day without plugging it in. In fact, you may be able to complete all of your work! This drastically decreases your energy usage and can help you save money on bills.
Maintain optimal performance
The problem with some laptops is they run out of battery pretty quickly. These next two ideas will help you deal with this. Firstly, laptops and MacBooks can run out of battery when they are working too hard. The processor is running like crazy, so it drains the battery. Close any applications that aren’t being used to take a step in the right direction to solving this.
Similarly, delete unwanted applications on your laptop. For MacBook users, this means clicking on the app and uninstalling it. If you have a Windows laptop, you have to go into the System Settings and look for the menu that says Add or Remove Programs. Freeing up storage space makes your laptop run a lot better and lets the battery last longer.
Use the low-power mode
All laptops come with an eco-friendly power mode that uses up less energy. Essentially, it will optimize your laptop by lowering the brightness and doing everything possible to consume less battery power while you work.
In turn, this lets the battery life increase, so you can work for an extra hour or two before needing to recharge. Whenever your laptop is unplugged, you should keep the low-power mode on because it is so effective.
Just like that, your laptop can consume less energy at home. The whole idea is to keep it unplugged for as many working hours as you can. With the tips above, you should be able to do this without compromising your ability to work. It could mean that you don’t charge your laptop while working at all, or you only charge it once instead of two times. This has a huge impact when you consider it from a wider perspective. Think about how much energy you are saving per year!
