If you have a disabled child and you want some inspiration for some fun and educational activities that you can do together, read on. To help you find inspiration, we’ve put together a range of fun-filled accessible activity ideas that you can enjoy with your child, giving you the opportunity to make many magical memories together.

Getting Out And About

First things first, as it’s important to be able to get out and about in the most relaxed and comfortable way possible when you have a disabled child or children, your mode of transport should be a key consideration.

Fortunately, if you don’t have one already, finding the ideal wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) will be easy with the help of Allied Mobility. They offer a range of affordable new and used motability WAVs that you can buy, rent or lease through the Motability Car Scheme.

Visit Your Nearest Toy Library

If you have a younger child or children, then an accessible outing they are sure to relish is a trip to your nearest toy library.

Toy libraries are similar to the regular version, except in this case your kids get to choose the toy they like the look of the most and bring it home with them for a few weeks. If their love for their new toy remains undiminished once their borrowing time comes to an end, you have the option to buy it from them. It’s a fun and cost-effective way of ensuring that you only spend money on toys your children actually want to play with.

Explore A Historic Gem

Wherever possible, National Trust properties have been specially modified to be easily accessible for everyone, and they continue to adapt their heritage sites to make them easier to get around.

Research the National Trust buildings in your area to find out which are most suitable for your family’s needs and start planning an unforgettable day out, steeped in history and ancient wonder. Many National Trust properties also host special events throughout the year, including military re-enactments complete with jousting and sword-fighting, so if your child has an interest in the past, be sure to keep abreast of what’s on near you.

Create A Graffiti Wall

Here is a fun and decidedly colourful activity that you and your child can enjoy at home. All you need is an expanse of wall that you can paint – or perhaps a large blackboard, or even a garden shed that needs some decoration – and you can let your child go wild with colour.

Removable kid-friendly paints give you and your child the freedom to create, in the knowledge that your designs can be washed away and then redone another day.

Book A Riding Lesson

If your child loves horses and ponies, then why not treat them to a magical excursion they will never forget by arranging a riding lesson at your local RDA riding school or club? Not only will they learn a new skill, and get up close and personal with their favourite creatures, they will also get the opportunity to meet some new faces and perhaps even make new friends among their fellow learners.

Make A Special Memories Scrapbook

Finally, here’s another fun activity you and your child can do at home – create a big, colourful ‘special memories’ scrapbook of your favourite outings and activities; perhaps including some of those mentioned above. At the end of each week – or even each day – you and your child can cuddle up together and look back at all of the fun you have had together.
