Getting away from the city for the weekend is often something we need. It’s a place fuelled by stress and that can often get on top of us, particularly if we are living with mental health conditions.

More and more of us struggle with the likes of anxiety, depression and addiction these days and added stress can only exacerbate those, to the point where often seeking help in a rehab centre is the best option. Getting away for the weekend can be a good way to take stock of our mental health and spend some time relaxing and recuperating.

Across the country there are so many great spots for a relaxing getaway, and with summer here, here’s our top five to consider to alleviate your stress…

Whitby, North Yorkshire

Famed for its association with Dracula, Whitby is a quaint harbour town in North Yorkshire that is fantastic for slowly ambling through the winding streets before finishing your day with some of the best fish and chips in the country.

The harbour is a great spot for reflection, while climbing the steps to the dramatic ruins of Whiby Abbey is also a must, with fantastic views out to sea.

St Ives, Cornwall

St Ives has some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, while its vibrant art scene, including the Tate gallery is great for slowing life down a little and enjoying some quiet contemplation.

When the sun’s shining, there’s no better place to be than on Perthminster Beach, relaxing on the sands or taking a dip in the sea and feeling the reinvigoration. The town’s streets are also well worth exploring, while the seafood available in its many harbourfront restaurants really are a must.

Tenby, Pembrokeshire

The Welsh town of Tenby just oozes charm with its colourful Georgian houses and gorgeous South Beach. There are plenty of spots to sunbathe, while it’s also fantastic for walking, with the historic town walls, castle ruins and old Tudor Merchant’s House really giving a glimpse into the town’s rich heritage.

You can take a boat trip to Caldey Island where you’ll find further peace, while you can also head to Skomer Island where many puffins reside. Wales really is a wonderful place to visit.

Deal, Kent

Deal, a charming seaside town on the Kent coast, offers a mix of historic charm and modern amenities. The town’s pebbly beach is perfect for a leisurely stroll, and the picturesque pier provides stunning views of the coastline. Deal’s vibrant high street is lined with independent shops, cafes, and restaurants, offering a delightful shopping and dining experience. Explore Deal Castle, a Tudor artillery fortress, and the Timeball Tower Museum, which delves into the town’s maritime history. Deal’s relaxed pace and coastal charm make it an ideal destination for unwinding and enjoying the simple pleasures of seaside life.

Aldeburgh, Suffolk

Finally, the delightful town of Aldeburgh on the Suffolk coast has a rich cultural heritage, including being the home to composer Benjamin Britten. There’s a sculpture of a scallop in the town, created by Maggi Hambling that pays tribute to him, while its beachside walks are perfect for fresh air and relaxation.

Down the high street you’ll find plenty of boutiques and galleries, while fish and chips are also a must here. Just don’t let the seagulls get to them first!
