If you’ve been around here a while, you’ll know that we’ve been using the original SURI Sustainable Electric toothbrush for years now, and you can see from my review how much I love it: lightweight, eco-conscious, quieter than most brushes, long-lasting charge and it works incredibly well. So, when SURI brought out their brand-new SURI 2.0 model, I was genuinely excited to see what they’d updated. After all, the SURI 1.0 was already pretty great, so upgrading it without ruining the simplicity was going to be a challenge. But after a couple of months of use, I’ve got a clear sense of what feels new and whether it’s actually worth upgrading. Let’s take a look at how the SURI 2.0 compares to the SURI 1.0…

First impressions of the 2.0

At first glance, the SURI 2.0 looks a lot like the original, which, honestly, I was relieved about. One of the things I’ve always really liked about SURI is that clean, minimal, aluminium design, a far cry from the usual electric brushes which are usually huge, plasticky, and take up too much space.

The 2.0 still has that really slim, premium feel in your hand, and if you’re switching from the original, you won’t suddenly find it bigger, heavier, or more complicated.

It’s once you start actually using it that the differences become obvious.

An Important and Welcome Upgrade: The Pressure Sensor

This is the feature I didn’t realise I needed until I had it. With the 1.0, I always felt I cleaned really well, but SURI never warned you if you were brushing too hard and at my age, I have been seeing an increase in my gum lines receding. The 2.0 comes equipped with a Touchsense pressure sensor which gives you a gentle warning vibration if you’re pressing a little too hard as you brush. I didn’t think it would make that much difference, but it really does help you to adjust your brushing habits and will hopefully help to protect my gums a little bit more.

Cleaning Power

The actual cleaning experience hasn’t drastically changed (which is a good thing). The original SURI always gave me that really clean, just-been-to-the-dentist feeling, and the 2.0 still has that lovely, gentle sonic brushing, but with its high-amplitude sonic motor, it feels a touch smoother and more efficient.

Charging

The 2.0’s new charging system is magnetic and wireless, which already feels more modern than the little pin-based charger the original had. The stand also looks sleeker and is better constructed than the original. Both brushes still have a long battery life at 1+ months, which is one of the brushes’ biggest benefits.

Travel Case

The original travel case was very handy (we always use ours when travelling) but a little bit bulky. The new 2.0 version is slimmer, sturdier, and looks much nicer. You can still charge the toothbrush inside the case (wirelessly), and just like the original, this one also has UV-C cleaning, which helps to kill off 99.9% bacteria. Oh, and if you don’t want to carry the case on you when you travel, you can simply cover the brush head with the new plant-based brush cap that clicks straight on to protect the brush bristles inside your bag/suitcase.

Eco Credentials – still one of the strongest reasons to choose SURI

One thing I really hoped they wouldn’t change was the sustainability side, because that’s what helped SURI stand out in the first place. Thankfully, everything I loved about the original is still here in the 2.0:

  • aluminium body
  • plant-based brush heads
  • brilliant recycling scheme
  • reduced plastic compared with mainstream electric brushes

It’s always nice when a brand upgrades the product without sacrificing the values that made us fall in love with it in the first place.

So, Is It Worth Upgrading From The SURI 1.0?

This is a tricky one because it really does come down to personal choice. If your original SURI 1.0 is still going strong and you’re happy with it, the 2.0 isn’t something you need immediately. The core brushing experience is similar, and the sustainability story is the same.

BUT… if you tend to brush too hard, travel regularly, want a more premium charging setup, or your 1.0 is showing its age, then the 2.0 would absolutely be a worthwhile investment. The pressure sensor alone has made me a more mindful brusher, and the new case is such a good quality that I wouldn’t want to go back now.

If you’re buying a SURI for the very first time, I’d say go straight for the 2.0. It’s the better all-rounder and feels like the version SURI always meant to make.
