SURI Sustainable Electric Toothbrush Review

When I started making plastic-free swaps around the home the bamboo toothbrush was one of the first products I tried. Everybody online seemed to be sharing them, saying how good they are for the planet and what an easy swap it was and I did agree to an extent but having used an electric toothbrush for most of my life, switching back to a manual brush just didn’t quite feel right to me. I didn’t like the sensation, I would press too hard to try and get that decent fresh clean feel but would just end up with sore gums and I really didn’t like the results – my teeth certainly didn’t look as white. I was really disappointed but when it comes to things like oral health or any health, you have to put that first and so I went back to the drawing board to see what my other options were… And this is when I stumbled across SURI. They are a sustainable electric toothbrush brand that has designed and created the world’s first plant-based electric toothbrush which is fully repairable and recyclable. I went straight ahead and bought one and have now been using this toothbrush for around 10 months so I thought it was about time I wrote up an honest review…

About SURI

Having recognised the huge plastic problem we have created and after learning that over 4 billion toothbrushes are thrown away each year (often ending up in landfills or the oceans), with many of these also including unrecyclable batteries, SURI decided that it was time for a change – it was time for a sustainable electric toothbrush:

“Our brush heads are made from plant-based corn starch and our bristles are made from castor oil. We’ve designed our brush with these innovative materials because it makes them bio-based and reduces our reliance on petroleum-based plastics. Furthermore, we will recycle the heads for free in the UK and US. The body of our brush is made from aluminium which makes it long-lasting and easily recycled”

Sounds great, doesn’t it? On top of this, SURI has partnered with ClimatePartner to offset 100% of their brushes’ emissions, including their manufacture and transportation. They are committed to reducing and offsetting their carbon footprint each year. The company is currently B Corp pending too.

SURI Review

First Impressions

When my SURI sustainable electric toothbrush first arrived I was really impressed with the style, colour and how slimline and lightweight it was. I always found that the usual standard electric brushes were quite bulky and heavy so this was a welcomed change.

In my order, I also received the charger and the UV-C light travel case plus they had an offer for a free wash bag which I added to my cart too. Other extras they have available include a USB charging pebble and a magnetic mirror mount.

Using The SURI Electric Toothbrush

The toothbrush easily charges by being placed on top of the charging port and only takes around 4 hours to fully charge up – this will even last you for 40+ days!! When I first used my toothbrush it was very noticeable that it was extremely gentle and soft as well as fairly quiet. I was so used to previously using electric toothbrushes that have rough oscillating plastic bristles that at first, I wasn’t too sure how well the SURI would clean but it quickly became apparent that it actually works far better than the traditional ones. The reason for this is that it uses sonic cleaning technology which has a higher vibration than what I was using before. The SURI electric toothbrush has a vibration of 33,000 per minute which moves the toothpaste fluidly around your teeth and gently lifts away debris and plaque. Their bristles are designed in such a way that they will be able to get between all of your teeth and on top of this, the toothbrush has 2 speed modes for you to choose from and, like most electric toothbrushes, this one does turn off after 2 minutes so you can brush without needing to use a timer.

I can honestly say that this electric toothbrush has worked brilliantly for me. I feel as though my teeth are cleaner, my gums are never sore, the bristles get into every nook and cranny and even my dentist was impressed by the lack of plaque at a recent visit.

I think the other bonus has to be how long the battery lasts for. I have had electric toothbrushes in the past that seemed to constantly require recharging but the SURI just feels as though it goes on and on. This is really handy if you take it away with you on trips/holidays.

SURI UV Light Cleaner

As I mentioned above I also bought the UV light cleaner to help to keep the head in tip-top condition and reduce the number of germs on the bristles. You simply pop the toothbrush inside the UV light box and plug it in to allow it to charge and clean your SURI toothbrush. This is also really handy to keep it safe when travelling. SURI state that their UV light will help to kill around 99.9% bacteria.

More Sustainable Info

The heads on the SURI sustainable electric toothbrush should be changed around every 3 months and these can be sent back to the company using the pre-paid service/envelope for recycling. They do ask that you save up around 3 heads to send to be that little bit more eco-friendly. You can also compost these if you have an industrial compost service in your area. You will need to remove the bristles before sending them.

The company also offer a 1 year warranty so you can contact them at any time about problems or for repairs (after a year they will charge a small fee for repairs). And if you don’t get on with your toothbrush for whatever reason you have 100 days to return it under their money-back guarantee.

Overall Thoughts

This sustainable electric toothbrush is just the revolutionary product that we need for a greener planet and I am so glad I made this switch. The key here is that it is good for your oral health as well as for our environment and anything that can tick both those boxes gets a good review from me.
