Untamed Cat Food Review From an Old, Fussy Cat’s Point of View

Cat food is one of the biggest struggles we have had as cat owners over the years. When our tabby, KitKat, was younger, we felt like we were constantly buying food, yet he never seemed satisfied. After some research, we discovered that a lot of the well-known cat foods are high in water content and fillers rather than meat, leaving many cats still hungry and needing more. Of course, there are now many other brands to choose from and over the course of Kit’s lifetime and his changing needs, I feel like we have tried the majority of them! At 16, KitKat is now a lot slower than he once was, and has had several health issues/worries of late, with the most life-changing one being hyperthyroidism. He has to take medication twice a day, go for regular vet checkups and we switched him from senior food to adult food in order to help to keep his weight up. Unfortunately, just when we thought we had solved his food issues, he began struggling to eat, which led to a vet visit and a dental that ended up leaving him with very few teeth. We found ourselves back to square one in our mission to find a cat food that would work for him and now with the additional need of it being soft and easy to eat. Oh, and did I mention he’s also a fussy cat? Yeah, quite a combination there – old, skinny, medicated, no teeth and fussy. We had been trying every food that was being recommended to us, and each time we thought we had it cracked, he’d change his mind and turn his nose up. Just as we were wondering where to go next with his diet, Untamed emailed me, and after a look at their website, food quality and ethics, I was very happy and eager to try out and review their range of cat food.

About Untamed Cat Food

So, what stood out to me when I clicked on the Untamed website? Firstly, they clearly state what I knew: that most cat food on the market isn’t up to the job, using fillers and water, lacking the meat content and containing sugars. Untamed, on the other hand, uses 100% human-grade meat, no grains or greens and no unnatural fillers. They fully understand the dietary needs of cats and have worked hard to ensure their food has twice the amount of protein compared to other brands. They also have a wide range of food options such as pate, jelly, gravy and broth which is ideal for fussy cats, and of course I was very impressed when I saw they are a B-Corp Certified brand, who care about recycling, giving back and sourcing their meat and fish sustainably. They also score highly in the ethical performance category (98/100) on the Good Shopping Guide.

“From sharp teeth to a short digestive tract, cats are built to be strict carnivores. Meat isn’t just a preference, it’s a necessity. That’s why Untamed wet food is made with real meat and packed with the nutrients your little predator would eat in the wild.”

Untamed Cat Food Review

First Impressions

After outlining my cat’s needs to the brand (I did this via the contact but you can do this on their website when you hit the Try Now button), my food selection was made and my order arrived really quickly. I chose a mixture of pate, gravy and broth because I felt all of these would be easy for my nearly toothless cat to manage. The packaging is not only beautiful (just look at the colours on those boxes – I didn’t want to throw them away!) but it is also all easily recyclable at home which is something you rarely see when it comes to pet food. Pouches seem to have become the go-to option, but I much prefer tins that can be endlessly recycled and can go in my green bin.

I also really liked the informative leaflet which is packed full of all you need to know about a cat’s diet, how Untamed differs from other cat food, how to incorporate a new food, their B-Corp status and more.

The First Taste

I decided to start KitKat off with a tuna pate to see if he could manage it with his dental situation. Now, most cats may need to transition to new food over the course of 7 days but because Kit has tried so many in the last few years and was refusing the food we had him on, we just jumped straight in with Untamed. Of course, being something new, he immediately tucked in and the bowl was quickly licked clean. However, I know my cat and I have seen this behaviour before – loving a new meal for a short time and then changing his mind – so I knew I had to keep a close eye over the coming weeks and to test the other Untamed options to weigh up which were the real winners. But for now, I was happy and so was he.

Introducing Gravy and Broth Meals

I was right. Even though we quickly established that the pate was yummy and easy to eat at first, Kit began to miaow for more, and luckily for him, I had other options to offer up – gravy and broth. Both meals looked amazing. Real slivers of chicken and meat in a tasty gravy or broth, and none smelling like your typical cat food. This seemed far more luxurious. As soon as he got a whiff, he was eager to try and even with very few teeth, he wasn’t going to let this hold him back!

That food was gone in a flash, leaving us all so surprised. For months we had avoided foods of this consistency or anything we thought he may find tricky to chew down, but here he was managing perfectly fine and even asking for more. It was great to see him enjoying food again and then going off for a long nap after his meal. He was satisfied and contented.

Untamed Favourites

Within the first week or so, it was clear that the pate wasn’t cutting it for KitKat, and his favourite Untamed meal soon became chicken and ham in gravy. He would eat the other options and flavours we were sent but he would just go crazy for that meaty choice. Because he liked this so much I decided to pop to Sainsburys to buy him Untamed’s food in jelly too just so I could see if he could manage that and if he liked it as well. I didn’t initially opt for it when speaking to the brand because when I think of cat food in jelly I envisage large chunks in a thick jelly which would be hard for a gummy cat to get through. Untamed’s version isn’t at all like this. This meal is still made up of those lovely meaty slices and they sit in a barely there, light jelly.

It certainly didn’t bother Kit; he devoured that meal quickly and easily too, proving me completely wrong and showing us that even an old boy with no back teeth can still eat exactly what he wants.

A Few Weeks Later

We are now several weeks into trying Untamed cat food and this change is still going really well. KitKat isn’t pestering us as much for food each day, he is maintaining his weight, his coat is lovely and shiny and he is loving his fancy cat food with real meat. I am keeping my fingers crossed that with all the options and flavours, we can keep him interested in this food for the rest of his life.

Getting Started with Untamed Cat Food

If all of this sounds like something your cat may enjoy and benefit from, you can set up your trial box for £7 (just 58p per tin) over on their website. All you need to do is fill in your cat’s info (name and age), choose what they like or don’t like, select your food preferences, how much food you think they will need a day and a member of the team will email you their recommendations. Easy! You will also find treats and kibble on the website too.

It is also now available in supermarkets such as Sainsburys, Tesco and Morrisons.

We will certainly be carrying on with Untamed, as long as our old, fussy KitKat is happy, we are too.
