If you’ve recently undertaken a medical procedure or have had serious surgery, it’s important to follow a strict aftercare routine to ensure you can fully recover without any complications.

Read our guide on the necessary aftercare steps to follow after you’ve had your medical procedure.

Follow doctor’s orders

Your doctor or surgeon should have made you aware of any important information regarding your recovery process. You should closely follow the advice given to you to ensure you are on the right path to recovery.

Perhaps you’ve been prescribed some antibiotics or advised to follow any recommended rehabilitation steps – these are crucial to your recovery and should not be overlooked.

Looking out for complications

Make sure you keep an eye out for any complications or issues within your recovery process as soon as possible, so your condition doesn’t become any worse. It’s common to receive an incorrect diagnosis or even your symptoms being ignored, resulting in inadequate treatment.

You can file a clinical negligence case if your condition has worsened as a result of the care given to you by a medical professional.

Diet and nutrition

You may find yourself with a loss of appetite since your operation. Your body has been through a lot, so it needs the right food and vitamins in to order to fully recover.

Ensure you are eating a healthy balanced diet and drink plenty of water to help aid your recovery. Staying hydrated and eating well can significantly assist with the healing process.

If you are feeling nauseous, slowly introduce food items back into your diet, or ask your doctor what they would recommend.

Staying active

If your body is aching and you’re feeling more tired than usual after your surgery, this is completely normal. It’s likely that you’ll have become weaker during your time spent at the hospital, and this can be down to your lack of activity.

As soon as you feel well enough, try to get up and be as active as you can so to help your body recover its strength.

Follow up appointments

Attend all your follow up appointments that your doctor or surgeon has arranged for you. If you have any concerns, you can arrange an appointment yourself to speak to a professional with concierge medicine, which provides more personalized care and quicker access to medical advice.

For instance, if you were hit by a car while cycling, your post-surgery appointments are a crucial step to your recovery process, as your doctor can check in and see if you are recovering properly and can observe any underlying issues.

Even if you are feeling well enough and your recovery is going smoothly, it’s still important to attend these appointments, mainly so your surgeon knows how you’re getting on and if your wound is healing nicely.
