How to Baby-Proof Your Car

Expecting a little one? Congratulations! This is an incredibly exciting moment in your life, but it is also a daunting one. You will want to make sure that you are prepared for your little bundle of joy and there is a lot that needs to be considered. One hugely important task will be to baby-proof your car so that it will be safe and comfortable to transport the newest addition to your family.

Get the Car in Good Condition

First and foremost, you want to make sure that your car is in tip-top condition so that it is safe for your baby and you won’t break down in the middle of nowhere. You will want to get a full service for your car so that the maintenance is taken care of and any small issues are picked up before they become major problems. This will also give you peace of mind knowing that your car is a safe environment for your baby.

Car Seat

The second most important step is to get a high-quality car seat for your baby and you could buy new, buy second-hand or ask a friend/family member if they have one that they no longer need. Keep in mind that regulations and laws about car seats often change, so you want to familiarise yourself with the latest developments before buying a car seat. It is also a good idea to get this well in advance of your due date so that you can practice installing/taking out a car seat (not the easiest task!).

Sun Visor

It is important to try to keep your newborn out of direct sunlight for the first 6 months, which is why you should have a sun visor for the car. This will protect your baby while also creating a darker environment that will (hopefully) encourage them to sleep. It could also be helpful by alerting other road users that you have a baby on board.

Rear Facing Mirror

The baby will be in a rear-facing seat in a car seat, so you want to install a mirror on the back headrest so that you can see their face and keep an eye on them (just make sure that you can see it in your rearview mirror for safety reasons).

Back Seat Organiser

You will quickly find that car journeys can be chaotic when you have a baby, especially because you have to take so much with you. A back seat organiser will make it much easier as you can keep the car tidy and get easy access to toys, blankets, nappies, wet wipes and anything else that you will need.

Hopefully, this post will help you to get your car prepared for your bundle of joy so that you can transport them safely and with confidence upon their arrival.
