How To Keep Your Home In Working Order Throughout Winter

Now that we are well and truly in the midst of winter, it’s time to make sure we are doing all we can to look after our homes, and in turn, our families, throughout the coldest season. It can be a more difficult time of the year in terms of weather and general home upkeep but if you make sure the following things are kept in check then your home should stay in working order throughout the colder months – this is especially important now as we are spending more time than ever indoors at the moment.

Get your Heating Checked

At the top of the list is ensuring your boiler is running as it should. This is absolutely essential if you live in a country that experiences harsh winters. Ideally, you should be getting your boiler checked by a professional engineer on an annual basis to ensure that it is doing what it should be and not posing a threat in any way. Shovel and Grit Outside

With snow, ice, sleet and rain a more likely prospect around this time of the year, slipping and falling also sees a significant rise, unfortunately. Sometimes this cannot be prevented but we can at least try to minimise the chance of accidents occurring on our front drive, by appropriately shovelling away snow and gritting potentially slippy grounds. This will make it easier for you to walk across and also reverse your car out of the drive if necessary. The same method can be used in the garden to keep it safer, especially if your kids are playing outside.

Clear your Gutters

This is probably best done before winter really sets in but if you’re a little late then it hopefully shouldn’t be a problem. As autumn has recently been and gone, you may still have leaves leftover in your gutters, along with sticks and other bits of debris. This can cause blockages, which can become a big problem if left to build up, especially with the addition of snow, rain and ice. Get Out the Welcome Mat

Muddy boots, wet trainers and dirty wellies are another thing we must contend with in winter. To prevent your carpets from starting to resemble a brown, shabby colour throughout your living space, invest in welcome mats (one for outside and one inside of your house). This way, the outdoor mat can get off the main bulk of the dirt, then the indoor one can get off the last little bits leftover. You can also use a towel or old rug to place your shoes on inside. Make sure you have clean slippers by the front door to change into instead of your outdoor shoes – a clean house and cosy feet equal a win-win outcome.
