When it comes to choosing eco-friendly kids toys, there are plenty of options on the market and many of us are aware about the importance of choosing durable, ethically sourced, sustainable ones over the plastic fad items but have you ever thought about your children’s play mat? Did you know that most are made from EVA or PVC both of which contain plastics and toxins? The Non-Toxic Play Mats by Pure Earth Collection are a far more eco option. Made only from natural sustainable plus biodegradable rubber and cork these are an ideal choice and we were sent a Rocky Road Play Mat to review…

About Pure Earth Collection

Pure Earth Collection (previously known as Little Earth Baby) was founded by Emma Bianco due to her love of babies, our planet and all things natural. Having suffered from allergies and other health issues for many years, she started looking more deeply into what might be truly behind many of the growing health complaints faced today. Discovering how many products around us contain toxic ingredients, Emma became passionate about wanting to provide safer options for our children as well as our beautiful planet. Due to this, Pure Earth Collection’s eco kids products are natural, non-toxic and biodegradable.

Rocky Road Non-Toxic Play Mat Review

First Impressions

When the mat arrived I couldn’t believe firstly how big it is in real life, secondly how thick it is and lastly how cushioned. I was really impressed by the quality and overall feel. Play mats we’ve had in the past have always been flimsy, broken easily and have had that plastic aroma to them. With this natural cork, not only does the Rocky Road mat look nicer, it is also warmer and more durable.

I absolutely adore the design on this non-toxic play mat. With an ocean with a whale and boat, cacti, mountains, parking spots and a road, I really like the simplicity but the idea that children can ‘travel’ around their mat with vehicles and reach different destinations and park up. The cork look is also perfect because the neutral tone will fit in with any playroom, nursery or bedroom.

All of the Pure Earth Collection non-toxic play mats are shock absorbent, antibacterial, easy to clean, naturally non-slip and super light and transportable – ideal for busy parents and busy children. In fact, they tick all of these boxes:

  • Natural materials which are non-toxic and biodegradable
  • The tree foam is natural rubber foam underside with cork on top, sustainably harvested from the sap and the bark to protect and maintain the living trees
  • Free from: PVC, EVA, formaldehyde, formamide and other synthetic and dangerous materials and chemicals
  • Padded enough to cushion falls yet firm enough for stability
  • The cork top is naturally antibacterial and provides a wipe clean surface
  • Safe and non-toxic inks
  • Rolls up easily for storage or taking outside, super lightweight
  • Insulates against cold floors keeping little ones warm
  • Doubles up as the perfect yoga mat for nap time work outs
  • Biodegradable and ethically made

Play Test

Well, I can most definitely report back that the mat was a hit from the moment my youngest (3) saw it. He couldn’t wait to get his cars, tractors and fire engines onto the play road and immediately spotted that the mat had an ocean, parking spots and mountains so set about creating his imaginative play world where people needed rescuing from these different areas.

On top of this, we have a very inquisitive puppy who is often by William’s side as he plays. At first I was really worried about her claws but Pure Earth Collection reassured me that their mats are also pet-proof. After a couple of weeks of play, rolling on it, chewing her toys on it and even sleeping on it, I can concur!

I also have an older boy (7) who I didn’t think would be very interested in this play mat but it turns out I was completely wrong and if I’d known a mat with a road would have been so popular I would have invested in one far sooner! The boys have played with it almost every day since it has arrived with lots of role-playing going on.

We’ve had it downstairs in the living room as well as up in the bedrooms. It easily rolls up and isn’t very heavy so I can move it with ease.

Cleaning

The mat can be wipe cleaned with a dry or damp cloth with no need for sprays or chemical products. The cork is naturally antibacterial so a quick wipe up of spillages, food etc is all it will need, anything more can alter the colour. I’ve also found it to be really easy to brush clean to rid it of any pet hair or fluff.

Storing

As mentioned above, the mat rolls up really easily which means it can be laid under a bed, propped up against a wall or inside a cupboard for storage.

Overall Thoughts

The Rocky Road Non-Toxic Play Mat gets a big thumbs up from us not only from a sustainability viewpoint but also from a play one. It is clearly going to get a lot of use in the coming years and due to the way it has been designed and created, it will last the test of time.

  1. I love this! I wish my lot were still younger so that I could justify getting one. It looks really cool and with the added bonus of the eco friendly too.

    1. I bet they’d still play with it!! I was so surprised that my 7 year old (almost 8) loved it so much, he rarely gets down on the floor to play now (that’s not cool anymore, video games are… sigh) but he thought the road was great!
