Review: Sustainable and Refillable Toothpaste From Mighty Mouthcare
*Ad
When it comes to making greener choices, one of the hardest swaps for many is to eco-friendly dental products. The options over the years have been pretty sparse in my opinion, with toothpaste tabs being one of the most talked about ways to ditch the plastic, but let’s be honest, chewing a tablet first thing in the morning really isn’t it. Not only did I find the texture almost unbearable, but my mouth didn’t feel very clean after brushing, and they also weirdly gave me heartburn! Other brands have tried, but many don’t include Fluoride (something I personally want to use) and don’t taste great. I did eventually find something I loved, but I couldn’t get the children or my husband on board with it, so for years, I have had no choice but to continue to buy them the standard plastic tube toothpastes from the supermarket (begrudgingly!) That was until this summer, when the new brand Mighty Mouthcare contacted me asking if I would like to try out their sustainable and refillable toothpaste, which does contain Fluoride. I had never heard of a refillable toothpaste before and was really intrigued, so I jumped at the chance to put this product through its paces and after 3 months of use, I am ready to give you my honest thoughts…
About Mighty Mouthcare
Mighty Mouthcare was created with one simple goal in mind – to tackle the huge amount of waste that our bathroom habits leave behind. Did you know that around three billion toothpaste tubes are thrown away every year?!! And one of the biggest problems here is that most of these can’t be recycled, meaning they end up in landfill or worse, our oceans.
The team behind Mighty Mouthcare decided that enough was enough. They wanted to make a toothpaste that was good for our teeth and the planet without asking anyone to compromise on freshness, flavour or convenience. Their answer is a refillable toothpaste system: a cleverly designed reusable dispenser that you top up with biodegradable refills. Their toothpaste is dentist-approved fluoride (1450ppm) for cavity protection, contains gentle papain enzymes for natural whitening, and refreshing English mint essential oils for long-lasting freshness.
Mighty Mouthcare is fully behind the “refill, not landfill” movement

Mighty Mouthcare Toothpaste Review
First Impressions
One thing I always like to see from a sustainable company is sustainable packaging, and Mighty Mouthcare have achieved that. I was very pleased to see a sturdy, cardboard box with cardboard inserts and supports that can all easily be reused or recycled/composted. The products themselves – a dispenser and refill – come secured within the cardboard to prevent damage and to also look nice, which they certainly did. With the instructions on how to set up your dispenser with the refill printed on the inside of the box, there’s no need for leaflets, which would cause extra waste and no way you can go wrong.

Setting Up
- Lift the nozzle up from the top of the dispenser
- Remove the lid from the refill and twist it into the dispenser’s nozzle
- Push the nozzle and refill into the dispenser base until you hear a click
- Pump the nozzle to dispense the toothpaste onto your brush (just 2 pumps required)
- Twist the base clockwise to lock the dispenser
Super simple, so much so that on our very first try, my 7-year-old did it all by reading the instructions himself.

Refills
The refill tubes are made from biobased ingredients, which will naturally biodegrade. I did speak to the brand to check if I could pop these in my home compost bin and they said they are still conducting thorough tests before widely stating this, but yes, they will break down in these conditions. If you don’t have a compost bin, check with your local council to see if this can go into your kerbside recycling.

Trying The Toothpaste Out
The Mighty Mouth toothpaste has a strong, fresh, minty taste to it which I really hadn’t been expecting. For just 2 pumps on the dispenser, it is exactly what its name suggests – Mighty! To start with, I wondered if it would be too minty for me, but I quickly got used to it and really do like that fresh feel it leaves behind, plus I could see a difference in whiteness fairly quickly.
The moment of truth – could I finally get my children on board with an eco-friendly toothpaste? I have to admit, I didn’t hold out much hope, not after all the others I had already tried but… They actually surprised me. My eldest (11) liked it immediately and was an easy convert. My youngest (7) took a little longer to get used to the minty taste, but he persevered, bless him, because he knew this option was much better for the environment than his usual toothpaste. And I can report back that both of them are still using Mighty today, we’ve even invested in a second dispenser so we can all use it.
Something else to note is that every last bit of toothpaste is always used thanks to the vacuum created inside the pump. No having to squeeze out every last bit, and no cutting the tube open to scrape the remnants out. Another way that Mighty Mouthcare have prevented waste.

Oh, I can also report that we have all been to the dentist since using Mighty and there were no oral issues at all.

- Leaves mouth minty fresh
- Whitening qualities
- Natural Ingredients
- Lasts a month +
- No squeezing every last drop out

Cons:
- Possibly costs for some – I did compare the costs of this brand to those of other available options, as I wondered if price might be a con for some people. However, since toothpaste prices vary significantly across the board (anything from £1 up to £9 with some eco brands costing over £10), I would be inclined to say that Mighty falls into the mid-range area at £6 per refill on their buy once option. However, as stated above, if you subscribe it becomes more affordable at £4.80 per refill (Mighty state it is 6p per brush). *And if you read until the end, I can give you 20% off a starter kit*
- Only for 7+ – currently the only option available is for ages 7 and over. Maybe a younger child toothpaste range will come to the market one day but for now, it is only this one choice.
- Some people may find it a bit too minty.
Overall Thoughts and Discount!
You can probably already tell from the above that Mighty Mouthcare has really impressed us and we are all still using it with great results. I am over the moon that a UK based company has brought a refillable option to the market – there was such a gap here – and I will definitely be recommending making this switch to anyone who will listen!
