The BEST Eco-Friendly Homemade Toilet Cleaner You Will Try

Cleaning a toilet the eco-friendly way can have its challenges. If you are anything like past me, you have probably always grabbed that bottle of bleach to get that clean look/sparkle/fresh smell but it really isn’t doing everything you think it is PLUS it is terrible for the environment. It took me a while to realise but once I knew, I made the changes I needed in order to make my home more eco-friendly. Trouble was, I couldn’t find a product that gave me the clean my toilet needed (not with 2 young boys in the house!). So, I started to look into making my own products. One fun product I made, which you may have seen on my blog before, are toilet bombs. They combine the power of citric acid and bicarb to create an easy to use fizzing “bomb” that will do all the hard work for you. Now, I do love these but they do take some time and practise to make and as a busy Mum, I don’t have much time! So, I needed to come up with something else. Something quick, something easy, something that worked just as well… I came up with something that in fact worked better! My eco-friendly homemade toilet cleaner and this is how you make it:

What You Will Need:

Measuring Cups (Like these here)

Bowl

Spoon

Bicarbonate of Soda – Purchase Here

Castile Soap – Purchase Here

Essential Oils (tea tree oil and eucalyptus are perfect for this area) – Purchase Here

Cooled Boiled Water

Squeezy Bottle (I reuse one that once had Castile Soap in it)

Method:

Measure out 1/2 cup of castile soap and pour into a bowl

Measure out 1/2 cup of bicarbonate of soda and tip into the bowl

Measure out 1 cup of cooled boiled water and pour it into the bowl

Mix the ingredients well with a spoon

Add 15-20 drops of your chosen essential oils

Mix again

Pour your mixture into a squeezy bottle

Using:

Always give your bottle a good shake before using your eco-friendly homemade toilet cleaner (this is to ensure the ingredients are well mixed)

Squirt around the toilet bowl

For best results leave for 30 minutes to an hour

Scrub the toilet with a toilet brush making sure to get the product all over

Flush and check out your sparkling clean toilet

Timings:

I absolutely promise you that I can make this in just minutes now. I get all of the things I need out ready and can mix them in around 2 minutes meaning it takes me far less time than the toilet bombs and gives me more time to do other things. If you need to make more because you have several toilets in your home, just double the quantities. I have 3 toilets so this method above will mostly be gone by the time I have cleaned them but you can still store this in a cupboard for use the following week with no issues with it “going off” (just always make sure you shake it well first).

Other Tips:

Limescale Problems:

When you stop using bleach, you may think you suddenly have a limescale problem but in actual fact, it has always been there, you just didn’t know. Bleach bleaches it giving the impression that your toilet is clean and limescale free when it never really is. To really tackle those issues, you will need citric acid.

Now, companies will probably state different directions on their packets so do check these before wasting any of your citric acid. The product I like to use is from Dri-Pak and they recommend pouring half of their box into the toilet and this has always worked well for me.

Method:

Start by emptying as much of the bowl as you can

Pour warm water into the toilet bowl (not boiling as this could crack the enamel)

Add your citric acid and leave it to work – overnight is going to give you the best results

Flush your toilet and check out the results!

Natural Bleach

If you don’t feel that this eco-friendly toilet cleaner is giving you that whiter than white toilet bowl that you were used to when using chemical bleach, why not try a natural bleach instead? Percarbonate of Soda is a safe and natural bleach used for bringing clothing back to its best, removing stains and brightening your toilet! Simply pop 2-3 tablespoons into a jug of around 500ml-1 litre of boiling water. Give it a good stir, you will begin to see it activating and then pour it into the toilet bowl. You can leave it for an hour or for best results leave it overnight. Flush and admire your sparkly toilet.

Eco Cleaning really shouldn’t be hard work, tricky, take up too much time or be overwhelming. Whenever I look to share recipes like this, I always take into consideration what people can achieve during their busy days and I hope that comes across.
