The Best Vegetables to Grow at Home

More and more people are now choosing to grow their own vegetables at home. It’s easy to do and costs less than buying them from the store. It’s also a great way to help the environment by reducing pollution caused by transportation.

If you’re looking to start growing your own produce, here is a list of the best vegetables you can grow at home.

Lettuce

There’s nothing like dipping into a lovely salad in the middle of a hot summer. Growing your own lettuce gives you unlimited options to make your own salad bowls. Lettuce takes just a few weeks to grow, making it perfect to grow in time for a quick and healthy snack on a summer’s day.

Broccoli

Broccoli is one of the most popular vegetables. It tastes great and is absolutely packed full of nutrition. If you plant it in early spring, you will have your broccoli available to eat by summer. You can grow broccoli indoors and outdoors depending on the temperature where you live. It’s a good idea to grow your broccoli in containers or plant pots and watch out for worms and insects that enjoy feasting on the plant!

Green Beans

Green beans are a great vegetable to start growing in the spring months. Green beans generally stop growing in the middle of summer, so you have to keep a close eye on them and pick them at the right time to get the best results.

Tomatoes

Despite what many people believe, tomatoes or vegetables! They are a popular vegetable to grow among children and they can be grown in hanging baskets or plant pots. Tomatoes make a great addition to any salad bowl, and provide a bunch of nutrition.

Beetroot

Beetroots are an amazing vegetable to grow at home, particularly during Spring. Unlike many other plants, you can eat both the beet and the greens. There is the option to grow small beets that are just a couple of inches wide or allow them to become a little larger before picking them. As the beats grow, make sure they have enough room. Try to spread them out at least 5cm apart in your garden.

Carrots

Carrots are one of those vegetables that grow mostly underground, so they take a little bit of guesswork to get right. However, they are a wonderful vegetable to grow and provide a bunch of nutrition when picked and eaten. They prefer cooler weather and require watering regularly. Most carrots will be ready to eat after just two or three months.

Potatoes

Potatoes are a delicious and versatile vegetable to grow at home. They grow best during early Spring in compost. As they start to grow, you need to continually add more compost when you see small green shoots start to appear. Repeat this process until your pot is full and make sure to regularly water the plant. It takes around 15 weeks for potatoes to fully grow.

  1. Yes, growing your vegetables at home is so much fun for the whole family! I love arugula and enjoy watching it sprout up in my garden. Its a fast grower and makes the tastiest salads! Carrots are another great choice. Little kids love pulling them out of the ground!
