Want to Make Your Own Clothes? Here’s What You Need
Most of us get our clothing via shopping. We simply pop into our favourite stores or scroll for hours online. After all, it’s quick and convenient. However, there are various reasons for learning to make your own clothes.
Some people might just do it for fun – as a hobby, or because they have a passion for fashion. But even if you’re not interested in fashion, making your own clothes can be great because not only do you save money, but it’s also better for the environment. There are a few things you need to make your own clothes, so keep reading to find out what they are.
A sewing machine
Many households get by without a sewing machine. After all, if you only mend clothes, you can get away with hand sewing them.
But if you’ll be making your clothes, you won’t be able to do it by hand. It will take ages, and likely be a messy and painful task. Investing in a good sewing machine is the first step to making your own clothes.
It may take some time to get used to your sewing machine, but it will be worth it. There are various types of sewing machines, so you can have a look around and find one that suits your needs.
Of course, it will be hard to make clothing without having the material to do so. When it comes to the kind of fabric you can choose for your clothes, the possibilities are nearly endless. However, there are a few types of fabrics that are more beginner-friendly, so it might be a good idea to start with those until you get comfortable. You can click here to learn more about that.
Very few people can sew something straight out of their head, even experts. Luckily, there are many available patterns that will help you ensure that you get the right cut for whatever item you need.
That being said, you are likely to make mistakes, even if you do follow a pattern, especially in the beginning. That doesn’t mean you should give up – fashion mistakes happen even if you don’t make your own clothes.
It’s best to embrace these fashion mistakes and move on. You never know, your clothing design may turn out to be something amazing in the end! Another thing that can help you when you’re just starting your sewing journey, is to take any measurements multiple times to avoid any mistakes.
Extra bits and bobs
As you sew more advanced items, you will realize that you will need to extend your sewing collection. It’s best to expand as you go. You might realize that you need a certain colour thread, or that you like adding some sparkly elements to your items.
Naturally, you will also need practical bits and bobs such as elastics, buttons, or zips which can all be found at HobbyKrafts or a local art supply store. If you’re not sure whether buttons or zips are better for jeans, this article may help you. Making your own clothes will certainly be a learning curve, so take your time, practice, and don’t be too harsh on yourself.
