Whether you have had the pleasure of visiting before or are visiting for the first time, Austria is a must-see, especially in the winter months when it usually snows from late December until March. With so much to see and do, I thought it would be best to narrow this guide down to 5 things you really must do during your winter holiday in Austria…

5 Things To Do in Austria in the Winter

Go on an adventure with the Huskies

If you’re looking for something a little special to do while you’re away, why not go on a sleigh ride with some huskies? These beautiful animals are quite a sight to behold when they’re just milling around their ranch but when you find yourself standing on a sled being pulled along the snow by a pack of them, there’s nothing quite like it. This is an experience that you’ll take home with you and remember for a long time.

Skiing

This might seem like a bit of an obvious one but whether you consider yourself a bit expert or if you are a newbie to the sport, you can’t beat trying out the ski resorts that are available in Austria. It can be difficult to know where to start booking so it’s best to do some research to determine the best destination for who’s travelling. For example, if you are travelling as a family, St Anton is a fantastic destination for all ages and capabilities. The facilities available at Mark Warner ski resort in St Anton make it a perfect destination for all the family. They also have a range of activities such as skiing, ice-skating, tobogganing, sleigh-rides and swimming.

Austrian Cuisine

If you are anything like me, when you think of Austria, their cuisine isn’t the first thing that springs to mind. However, they do have a thriving, rich historical food culture that you should definitely explore while you’re there. Here are some of the culinary delights that make the list:

  • Vienna Demel Pastry
  • Wienerschnitzel
  • Wiener Würstels
  • Goulash
  • Palatschinken
  • Apple Strudel

Let’s not forget The KaffeehausKultur!

If you are a bit of a coffee aficionado, you’ll feel right at home in Austria, where there is quite a sophisticated coffee culture. In fact, there is even a name for it, “The KaffeehausKultur”. It basically refers to the tradition of sitting around for hours sipping on coffee and engaging in discussions, debates and the exchange of ideas among each other.

Sight Seeing

Regardless of what area you choose to explore in Austria, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to breathtaking historical sights. Here are two top choices.

  • Vienna – The country’s capital is a great place to start. Take a wander through the old town and take in the city’s stunning architecture such as St. Stephen’s Cathedral to the Imperial Palace.
  • Salzburg – Home to Mozart and the Sound of Music. Every year, thousands of Sound of Music fans visit the city to take a walk in the footsteps of the Von Trapp family at the original shooting locations. Even if you’re not a fan of the famous musical, you’ll find that there is much more to Salzburg. Check here for everything you need to know about the beautiful city.
