People often say that the kitchen is the heart of the home but we believe that the living room is more deserving of this title.

The living room is where you spend your evenings relaxing or where you laugh and joke with your loved ones at a family gathering. It’s probably one of the first rooms that your guests and visitors go to when they visit your home too.

Because the living room is such a key area of any home, it’s worth spending time and energy making it look and feel great. It’s a room that should exude character and ambience, and you should feel comfortable and content in this area of your house.

Top Ways to Enhance Your Living Room’s Interior Design

There are hundreds of different ways to spice up the interior design in your living room, and most of these things are inexpensive and easy to do. Updating your living room can impact the feel of your entire home, so you don’t need to perform any huge renovations to achieve a modern and stylish living space.

Here are four great ways to boost your living room’s interior design this year.

1. Update your furniture

The furniture in your living room is arguably one of the most important aspects to consider with regard to your interior design. Outdated sofas and worn-out, rusty cabinets can make the room look shabby and uninviting.

Treat yourself to some new furniture pieces to modernize your living room. Choose a cozy new sofa and browse through the many designer coffee tables on the market to find the perfect statement pieces to add to the room.

If you don’t want to purchase brand-new furniture, get creative and revamp your existing pieces. You can upholster your sofa to give it a brand-new look and repaint your wooden cabinets to get rid of marks and stains.

2. Use mirrors to brighten up the room

Mirrors are a simple yet effective way to brighten up your living room without adding new lighting fixtures and racking up your electricity bill. They’re perfect for modern and contemporary interior design, and add a touch of class to this area of your house.

Consider hanging a large mirror above your fireplace or leaning a full-length mirror against one of the walls. Try to keep the mirrors by the windows in the room to maximize the amount of sunlight that is reflected into your home.

3. Replace the lighting fixtures

Lighting might seem like an insignificant part of your living room but it’s quite the opposite! The lighting in the room impacts its overall ambience and character.

Whether you spend time in your living room mostly in bright mornings or exclusively in the evenings when it’s darker will influence the best lighting options for you. During the day, you might not need very many lights in the room, but weaving fairy lights around the door or around the fireplace can be a great way to enhance your interior design.

For the darker evenings, consider installing new eye-level lighting or switching up your existing lampshades and fixtures. Your lighting fixtures are the perfect way to add a splash of color or a touch of sparkle to your interior design without going overboard, so have fun with it!

4. Modernize your fireplace

If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace in your living room, take this as an opportunity to upgrade it and add a modern spin to this area of your home.

Your fireplace isn’t just there to keep you warm; it also plays a key role in the aesthetics of the living room. Replacing your existing fireplace with something more stylish and on-trend will immediately boost your living room’s interior design.

There are lots of different fireplace options on the market nowadays. If you love the rustic style, go for a traditional coal or log-based fireplace. For something a little more modern, an electric fireplace could be a better option for you.

You’ll need to consider the logistics of getting a new fireplace, as well as your preferences. It might not be piratical to install a full-sized log fireplace in your living room and a built-in electric fireplace could suit the room better. This is something that you can discuss with professional builders.
