How To Make Natural Toilet Bombs
Cleaning my home more naturally is really important to me, firstly because I want to rid my home of chemicals and secondly because I want to reduce my plastic waste down as much as I can. This has led me to go down the route of making my own cleaners and so far, so good! My latest homemade challenge was to create some toilet bombs which would naturally clean my toilet with very little effort from me… And it turned out to be very, very simple and very effective! Here is how to make natural toilet bombs.
You will need:
1 cup (8 oz) Bicarbonate of Soda
1/4 cup (2 oz) Citric acid
Your chosen essential oils (around 20 drops)
Cooled boiled water in a spray bottle (approx. 12 sprays)
Scales
Mixing bowl
Bowl for scales
Spoon
Silicone moulds
The Method:
Measure out your bicarbonate of soda and pour into the mixing bowl
Measure out your citric acid and also add this to the mixing bowl. Stir both well together.
Add your chosen essential oils. I chose Tea Tree Oil as it is an antiseptic but any scent that you like will work well (lemon is a popular choice). Around 20 drops should be enough but you can add more if you’d like a stronger fragrance.
When it comes to adding the water you want to do this in stages. Once too much water mixes with bicarb and citric acid, the ingredients react together and begin to fizz and dissolve; you do not want this to happen. Start by giving 4 sprays and mix. Add another 4, then mix again. Then another 4 and mix again. Check the consistency of the mixture with your hands.
You want to be able to mould it. If you can hear fizzing, you definitely do not want any more water. However, if you have been too cautious and the mixture is still a little dry and crumbly, add a couple more squirts of water to try and obtain the right consistency.
Take your mixture and fill your silicone moulds with it. Press down quite firmly to ensure that the toilet bombs stick together and keep their shape. You can choose what shapes and sizes you want by using different moulds. You can have as much fun as you like with this.
Leave these to dry for 12 hours.
Once dry, they should easily push out of the silicone moulds and keep their shape.
Store your natural toilet bombs in an airtight container.
Use your natural toilet bombs as and when your toilets require them. Just throw them in and let them fizz away. You can take a toilet brush afterwards to scrub the rest of the toilet around and then flush.

I really like reading your blog. I always find something interesting. Natural toilet bombs seem to be easy to make, very useful and probably fun at the same time.
This is something I’d literally never think of doing! But the process actually looks pretty simple! Good for you for turning your home chemical free!
These sound fab Emma. I have never made them before, but like you I am trying my best not to have packaging. I bought a small glass jar and have bath salts in it. I could make some to fill my other jar.
That’s such a great idea! I wonder whether you can add some colour to make them look nicer
Love this idea. I really want to do more of this in my home but it’s overwhelming. I’m saving this post now! Thank you.
What a fantastic idea! I will be making some of these using my favourite essential oils- thanks
I do love a good step by step guide! This looks brillIant Emma. I’m added it all to my shopping list now x
I’ve recently started to take baths and will be trying these bath bombs!
I’m afraid these are toilet bombs, they clean the toilet. I wouldn’t recommend them in a bath.
Thank you for sharing some fantastic alternatives to chemical cleaning products
Great idea! I want to start making my own cleaning products so we’re more Eco friendly.
