Creating a Garden the Whole Family Will Love
*Collaborative Post
When you’ve got kids, your garden changes a little. It goes from your space to relax, unwind and entertain, to your kids play paradise. Kids absolutely love being outdoors, playing in the mud or riding their bikes. In no time, you can find that all of your lovingly planted flowers have been trodden on, your garden has been overrun with outdoor toys, and the decking that once played home to family BBQs and summer parties is now covered in mud and houses only broken toys and a paddling pool.
While it’s great to let your kids explore safely outside, it doesn’t mean that you have to lose everything you once loved about your outside area. There’s no reason that you can’t all have the garden of your dreams. It’ll just take a little planning and effort. Here are some tips to set you up for creating a family garden that everyone will love!
Think About Safety
If you want your kids to be able to explore and enjoy the garden, you need to make sure it’s safe for them to do so. Even in the nicest of gardens, there can be hazards that you need to look out for. The first thing that you should do is install a shed. A shed with an Armstrong steel and a secure lock can be a safe place to keep any garden tools and chemicals that you don’t want the children to find.
You should also consider higher fences, and a locked gate to ensure they can’t get out and no one else can get it, as well as making sure there are no tripping hazards or poisonous plants and treating your decking, so it’s not slippery when it rains.
A Raised Area
A decking is a perfect place for a BBQ and comfortable seating. A raised deck can be a great way to keep this area away from the children’s play space, while also giving you a fantastic place to sit and supervise their play.
Most people choose to place their decking next to the house so that they can walk right out on to it with their morning coffee. But, if you’ve got kids playing and coming in and out of the house, it can be a good idea to move the decking to the back of the garden, to avoid constant muddy feet.
Create a Mud Kitchen
Kids love mud. They’re never happier than when they are getting messy outdoors. So, let them. Give them an area filled with soft grass and toys. Help them to plant their own flowers and buy them kids garden tools so that they can look after them.
If they have an area where they are free to be messy and touch the flowers, they’ll be less likely to invade the rest of your garden.
Keep it Simple
They’ll be less likely to invade, but that doesn’t mean they won’t. Nor does it mean the occasional ball won’t flatten your favourite flowers. So, by all means, create adult and child zones. But, even within your area, keep things simple so that it’s easy to restore and you don’t get upset if things are damaged. There’ll be time for more complex garden décor when the kids start getting older.
I hope that’s given you a few ideas for creating a family garden for everyone to enjoy.
