Choosing art pieces to display for your home is a great way to bring some personality to your home, and an even better way to show off your tastes and add some colour to your decor. But how do you choose the right pieces for your home?

Choose The Right Size

Where do you want to hang the piece of art? How large a space is it? Find a piece of art or a few pieces, that will fill the space properly and not look lost on the wall.

If you have large, open rooms with a big space of wall to fill up, you can choose large-sized pieces for a more dramatic effect. Go smaller for smaller rooms or use a group smaller pieces to create a gallery wall. To create a gallery wall that showcases a few favourite pieces, choose a selection of work by the same artist, or in the same style or colour palette to create a cohesive setup.

Think About Style

What style is the rest of your home? Do you live in a traditional suburban home or a modern loft apartment? Is your decor shabby chic or sleek minimalism? Choose art that matches your decor style.

Find the kind of art you like. Visit an art shop to look at lots of pieces to get a feel for the kind of artwork that you enjoy and the kinds of styles that might work in your home.

Remember to frame your new art in the right style too, and not just focus on the art itself. Create themed spaces by buying a few pieces of art that go together. You can group them together on longer walls, or along stairwells to create attractive gallery-style displays.

To create a theme like this and to tie art in with your decor, in ways as simple as matching the main colours in a print to the colour of your walls. If you have decor themes, match the art to your theme. If your bedroom is designed to feel like a country cottage, pick prints that show countryside themes to match.

Start With The Art

If you’re in the process of redecorating a whole room and want to focus on art, shop for the art first. If you fall in love with a large feature piece, use that to inspire the rest of the room. Pick out the colours from the art to use in the rest of the room. Let the style of the art you’ve chosen influence the rest of the room, whether it’s modern or classic. Using the art piece to inspire the rest of the space means the piece will really shine.

Get The Mood Right

What feelings do you want your room to make people have? Choose art that helps you to feel that way. This could mean choosing soothing pieces that make you feel calm in the bedroom but opting for art with a livelier feel for the family room.

Art can have a surprising effect on your emotions, so choose carefully and make sure to put the right pieces in the right rooms.
