Cleaning Products That Make Being More Eco-Friendly Simple

Having a clean home is important but this has long been associated with chemicals, plastic bottles, plastic sponges and non-recyclable items. When you walk down the cleaning aisle in the supermarket you are stepping into an area that has a product for every job imaginable and it is easy to become overwhelmed, to feel as though you need it all and to go away with a trolley filled with plastic, which is why sourcing your cleaning products (including your brushes, sponges, scrubbers, etc) elsewhere is far more beneficial. SaveMoneyCutCarbon can meet all of your eco cleaning needs and more, and I am going to take a closer look at some of the eco-friendly cleaning products that they recommend and also some of my personal favourites.

Washing Up

The common washing up sponge is made almost entirely from plastic which means that as it is used, it breaks down and sheds microplastics into the water system, and then, once it is past its best, it will go on to live in landfill for hundreds of years. Swapping to an eco-friendly sponge or brush is a really simple way of doing your bit for our environment. By choosing a product that will naturally breakdown in a compost bin will not only reduce your household waste as well as your plastic waste, but it will also go on to give you something else that you can use – rich, useable compost. It really is a great switch all around.

For light washing up these compostable sponges from SaveMoneyCutCarbon are ideal. Not only are they soft to the touch, they grip onto dirt and pull it off with ease plus they can be machine washed and reused. Once they have seen better days, you can simply add them to your compost bin as they are made from cotton and plant cellulose.

If you like to give your dishes a good scrub then the dish brush is a great option. I particularly like this for food that is stuck on and for pots and pans. The head is compostable and you simply purchase a replacement one when required.

The EcoCoconut Scrubber has long been a favourite in our home. It tackles the tough jobs with ease, it is perfect for cleaning a grubby baking tray and makes washing up pans a breeze. Again, once used up, this can be composted.

The ecoLiving steel scourers are made from galvanised steel rather than stainless steel which means they are recyclable. They are ideal for getting baked-on food off casserole dishes, baking trays and pots and pans (not for use on non-stick though). They are also dishwasher safe and rust-free which means you can keep using them for far longer.

Bottle Cleaning

Did you know that your reusable water bottles need to be properly cleaned on a regular basis? I wasn’t aware until recently but bacteria can grow inside them due to the dark and moist conditions so a regular scrub with soapy water will help to protect yours and your family’s health. This bottle cleaning brush from SaveMoneyCutCarbon is ideal for this job. I’ve been trying it out for the last few weeks and it is simple to use, the bristles work wonders all around the sides and I have also found it perfect for reaching the bottom of our wine glasses and long narrow glasses that are usually tricky to clean and our milk bottles. Made from a coconut husk it is scratch-free, toxic-free, biodegradable and naturally antibacterial.

Eco-Friendly Cleaner

If you have followed me for a while, you will know that I love making my own cleaning products and that I find the whole process fun and very satisfying, however, I also know that not everybody has the time for this and I am often asked for other eco-friendly options so I was very happy to see that SaveMoneyCutCarbon added the OceanSaver EcoDrops into this month’s box for me to try.

OceanSaver bottle with the EcoDrops

OceanSaver are small, dissolvable eco pods. All you need is an old bottle, water and you simply pop the EcoDrop inside, give it a good shake until it has fully dissolved and you have your cleaner. It is really easy, very effective, smells great and it will significantly reduce your plastic waste.

You can see how easy it is in my Instagram Reel here:

Reusable Bamboo Towels

We made the switch to reusable kitchen roll last year because this is also classed as a single-use product and you can easily get through an awful lot of it each year. Having the option to still be able to keep this kitchen item but as a washable and reusable one is really beneficial and there are now a wide range of kitchen rolls available in different materials, sizes, designs and so on which means you can choose what suits your needs.

We went over to cloth ones made from cotton/terry towel mix and bamboo but I know this isn’t for everybody because it doesn’t necessarily feel like kitchen roll. If you are wanting to make this swap and want something that is reusable but very similar to what you are used to then the EcoEgg Reusable Bamboo Towels are perfect for you. The towels are made from 100% bamboo viscose, they come on a roll and are perforated so they can be easily separated, giving them the same feel as your traditional paper towels; the only difference being that you can wash and reuse them up to 85 times. They are very soft to the touch, they soak up water, clean surfaces and do everything that you would expect and they are surprisingly tough! Once they have reached the end of their life you can recycle them via your local textile recycling bin.
