‘For First Steps’ is a brand new eco-friendly, ethically sourced, unique online shop which is brimming with beautiful products for your children. From wooden toys to handmade dolls, natural rubber bath toys and puzzles and games. There are toiletries and night time essentials as well as mealtime accessories, baby blankets and so much more. The founder, Jana, has taken care and pride in selecting brands that hold the same earth and people-protecting values as she does herself in order to help us all make better sustainable shopping choices.
“Our toys inspire hours of carefree, imaginative play. They are educational without over-stimulating.
We present our collections in a gender-neutral way to allow children to discover their own passions.
And of course, you receive our products in eco-friendly packaging.”

German-born Jana grew up in a family, in which great importance was placed on natural and educational toys, organic and locally sourced food and eco-friendly products around the home. During her time studying at the London School of Economics her passion for eco-friendly living and social justice were further fuelled as she completed courses on the environment, labour standards, and gender and development. Jana also always felt very strongly about child equality and volunteered in two very poignant environments. Firstly, caring for babies and toddlers in an orphanage in Morocco. Secondly, working for an Indian NGO that battles the ongoing problem of child labour. Before starting ‘For First Steps’, Jana was employed by one of Germany’s leading sustainability consultancies in Munich. For over three years she supported multinational corporations in becoming more environmentally and socially responsible.
When the time came for a change, it was a natural move for her to return to the UK, a country that she loves, to set-up her brand new business ‘For First Steps’ where she could combine her interest in sustainability and child development whilst also working for herself. And because she wants the business to give back to those who need it, £1 is donated from each sale to the charities that ‘For First Steps‘ have partnered up with; ‘Best Beginnings’ a charity that sets out to reduce inequalities in child and maternal health in the UK and ‘Women and Children First’ a charity that protects the lives of vulnerable expecting mothers, their babies and children in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
What ‘For First Steps’ Stand For:
Our Responsibility Principles
We sell products that are earth- and people-friendly
The brands we work with show sincere commitment in regard to labour standards and produce in harmony with nature.
We minimise our own footprint
Where possible, we reuse packaging received from brands. Packaging material that we purchase is always made of eco-friendly materials.
We ensure gender-free marketing
We refrain from using gender filters or products labelled for girls or for boys. To us, these are artificial boundaries to children’s playfulness and imagination.
We give back
We have partnered with two amazing charities, Best Beginnings and Women and Children First. For each order placed, we donate £1 to support them.
