How to Encourage Sustainability In the Neighbourhood

Once you’ve mastered the ways to become more eco-friendly as a parent, you can start thinking about the bigger picture. The best place to start is by considering your local community, and there are many ways you can encourage your neighbours and local businesses to think about how their actions can impact the environment. If you want to get an idea of how to encourage sustainability in the neighbourhood (and even beyond), here are some tips to help.

Start a Community Garden

A community is a fantastic project that everyone can get involved in and improve sustainable practices within the neighbourhood. If you want to get started as soon as possible, reading a guide to help set up a community garden will give you all the information you need to know.

Your community garden can be whatever you want it to be, whether creating a haven for local wildlife, such as bees and birds, or growing fruit and vegetables that you can sell to local businesses or even allow people to pick when they are ready. What’s more, it makes the area nicer to look at and live in, which is something everyone wants from their neighbourhood.

Offer Waste Disposal Collaboration

Although you may have a weekly waste collection system, this may not always be enough, especially for people who do not have convenient transport to transfer other types of waste to the local recycling centre.

Creating a waste disposal collection system can help avoid fly-tipping or rubbish littered around the streets and nature areas. You can also look for businesses that have recycling machines and transport large amounts of waste to their premises to ensure everything is disposed of sustainably.

Campaign for Better Bike Lanes

Many consider cars a necessary evil., especially if you need to do your weekly shopping or travel to work. However, petrol or diesel vehicles can have a significant impact on the environment.

One solution to this is cycling, but even this is far from straightforward, especially if people feel like cycling to and from work is unsafe. Understanding the benefits of cycle lanes and campaigning for them with the local council could change this. Although cars will still be necessary for some, safe cycle lanes can make a difference.

Populate Local Businesses

Wherever you go, you will find local businesses that source local products to make a difference and provide healthy and sustainable alternatives to chain stores. However, too many people see these businesses as novelties and may not visit them as often as they should.

Ignoring their benefits means the business itself will struggle to thrive and survive. By populating local businesses, you will increase their turnover and ensure they are here for the long haul. Hopefully, this activates an attitude change within the community and transforms people’s ideas about the best places to get their food and other essentials.

Better Together

Working alongside your neighbours, friends, and the wider community will do wonders for making the environment better. This will have a positive impact on how proud you are of where you live and it can teach everyone the benefits and magic of sustainability.
