Growing your own fruit and vegetables can be an exciting project. It can save you money on groceries and it can help you to eat more healthily by relying on more organic foods. There are lots of ways to start growing your own produce – here are just several options.

Start a vegetable patch

If you’ve got the space in your garden, you could consider starting a vegetable patch. You’ll need to spend some time digging out an area and freeing it of weeds. Once you’ve got a suitable patch, you can start sowing plants of your choice.

Certain vegetables thrive better at certain times of the year so make sure to look at the best times to sow and the best times to harvest. Spring is a great time for sowing many plants, however, there are edible plants that can be sowed in summer, autumn and even winter. Tomatoes, zucchini, green beans and rhubarb are all great plants for beginners.

You’ll need to ensure that your plants are kept watered. Pest control could also be necessary to prevent slugs and snails devouring your produce. In the winter meanwhile, you may want to cover up certain plants overnight to prevent frost from getting to them. Adding drainage or opting for raised beds will meanwhile prevent waterlogging.

Invest in a greenhouse

Another option is to grow plants in a greenhouse. Greenhouses are excellent for protecting plants from rain, wind and frost, allowing you to grow plants all year round and extend seasons. The only thing you’ll need to worry about is watering these plants regularly as you won’t be able to rely on the rain.

It’s best to invest in a good quality greenhouse that will withstand harsh weather. Sites like https://www.cultivar.com/ can help you to find such greenhouses. You’ll find greenhouses or potting sheds in all shapes and sizes, fit for all kinds of outdoor space.

Grow edible plants indoors

Even if you don’t have a garden, it’s possible to still grow your own produce. Avocados, peppers, oranges, tomatoes, carrots, ginger, garlic and mint are just some of the plants that can be grown indoors in pots. You’ll need to place these plants by a window and keep them watered.

You can even look into hydroponics using sites such as https://www.growell.co.uk/ for resources. This is a process of growing plants without soil under indoor lights.

Rent out allotment space

Another option if you don’t have a garden could be to rent out allotment space. Most towns and cities have allotments that the public can rent out for gardening – it could be worth shopping around to find the cheapest in your area.

An even cheaper option could be to look into garden sharing. Sites like https://yardyum.com/ allow you to rent out other people’s unused garden space – this is often much cheaper than using an allotment.

Those are just a few tips on growing your own fruit and vegetables, do you have any to add?
