7 Air Purifying Plants That Will Help To Improve Your Home

a large selection of air purifying plants in a home

Did you know that the air quality inside of your home can be just as bad as outside? Pollution can enter via doors, windows or vents, it can even be brought in on your clothing. Cleaning products can inject chemicals into the air as well as onto your furnishings and these can linger without you even realising. Dust particles and pet hair can also cause problems for breathing. If your health hasn’t been the best and you believe this is linked to your home environment

– perhaps you have been suffering from headaches, allergies, lethargy– all of this may well be improved just by improving the quality of the air you are breathing in on a daily basis. A natural and also beautiful way of helping is by choosing air purifying plants which will remove harmful toxins and provide fresh oxygen which will completely change how your home feels.

Here are 7 of the best air purifying plants:

Spider Plant (Chlorophytum)

This is one of my favourites, basically because you cannot go wrong with a spider plant. They are so easy to care for and they bounce back even if you do neglect them for a little while. NASA tests have shown that it is perfect for tackling toxins such as formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene (a solvent). Since formaldehyde is often found in grout and fillers as well as in cleaning products, a spider plant placed in your kitchen or bathroom is the ideal location in order to reduce this in the air. The spider plant is also completely safe to have around pets.

Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

With its large stunning leaves and beautiful flowers, this house plant is a perfect air purifying choice. Not only can it help to filter out harmful benzene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde toxins but the moisture given off by its flowers can also boost a room’s humidity by up to 5%. This makes it a great choice for inside a bedroom but be sure to keep it high up away from pets as it can be poisonous if ingested by your cat or dog.

Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata)

With its large foliage, the Boston Fern is fantastic at removing toxins from the air, improving the air quality whilst also providing additional moisture. It should thrive with just a little misting and watering so would love it in your bathroom.

Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis miller)

Aloe Vera is such a clever plant, not only can it be used to soothe your skin (great on a burn) it also works 24/7 purifying the air in your home. This would be beneficial anywhere in your home but keeping one in your bedroom should lead to a far better nights sleep.

English Ivy (Hedera Helix)

English Ivy has been used in homes for many years. Not only does it provide a rich green backdrop, it is also a great air purifying plant plus it helps to prevent mould and (this is an interesting one) it can reduce airborne faecal particles. This would make it a great plant for a bathroom, however, it does also like sunlight so you will have to bear this in mind when deciding where to place it.

Snake Plant (Sanseveria)

This has been found to be the most effective plant in removing formaldehyde from within the home’s air. An evergreen plant, also known as Mother-in-laws tongue, it is a popular choice as it can be easy to look after (just do not over water it!) It acts in the same way as an aloe vera plant by working throughout the night as well as the day so would be a good choice for a living area or a bedroom.

Rubber Plant (Ficus Elastica)

This hardy plant is easy to care for plus it doesn’t require sunlight which means it can be placed in a corner of a room and left to do its clever job of purifying the air and removing those harmful toxins using their large leaves.
