We all want to make positive environmental changes in our lives, don’t we? Switching from single-use plastics to reusables, reducing our carbon footprint, eating more sustainably sourced foods, choosing eco-friendly transportation and so on, but as with everything in life, some areas are harder to tackle than others. One that I hear most often is around bathroom products and more commonly toothbrushes. You see, traditional plastic toothbrushes are a big plastic pollution concern but then ordinary electric brushes are also made from plastic and are non-recyclable but the eco-friendly bamboo toothbrush option isn’t to everyone’s liking. It can be so tricky. For years there was chatter about what was for the best but thankfully I can now share with you an even better choice for both your oral health and the planet – The SURI sustainable electric toothbrush. Let’s take a closer look at all of this…
The Problem with Plastic Toothbrushes
In the UK, it is estimated that around 264 million plastic toothbrushes are thrown away each year and, over in the US, it is estimated at over 1 billion making these essential tools a major environmental issue:
- Virgin plastic – the use of fossil fuels in production
- 400 years + to breakdown
- Releases microplastics into the environment, your body and waterways
- If not discarded of properly they can lead to injury or death of wildlife/sea life
The Appeal of Bamboo Toothbrushes
Bamboo toothbrushes have become a popular alternative to plastic, offering a biodegradable and home compostable (the handle only) solution. Bamboo is a highly sustainable material that grows quickly and doesn’t require pesticides or fertilisers. However, bamboo toothbrushes or any type of manual toothbrushes are not for everyone. Some people find manual brushing less effective or harder to maintain a consistent routine and prefer the efficiency of an electric toothbrush.
Why Choose SURI?
SURI (Sustainable Rituals) has bridged that gap between sustainability and the need for an efficient electric toothbrush. Having had mine for the last few years I can honestly say that they have done a great job…
- Eco-Friendly Materials: SURI’s handle is made from aluminium and plant-based plastics which significantly reduces the reliance on non-renewable resources. The brush heads are recyclable, addressing one of the biggest issues with traditional electric toothbrushes and the entire brush is repairable.
- Longevity and Durability: The SURI toothbrush is built to last, unlike many plastic alternatives that need frequent replacement. This durability reduces the overall environmental impact. The company will happily repair, recycle and replace any toothbrushes with issues.
- Innovative Design: SURI’s sleek design is not only looks great but it is functional. With 2 sonic speeds this toothbrush is designed for optimal cleaning performance.
- Energy Efficiency: The SURI electric toothbrush is also energy efficient, with a long-lasting battery that reduces the need for frequent charging (40 days at least).
- Convenient Subscription Service: SURI offers a subscription service for brush head replacements, ensuring you always have a fresh brush head while promoting responsible disposal and recycling.
My Experience
Like most people who are trying to make eco-friendly changes in their lives, I switched to a bamboo toothbrush in the hope that I would be making a difference. I had previously been using an electric brush but once it gave up on me I immediately ordered myself a bamboo one. Unfortunately, I quickly regretted this as I started to notice my teeth looking more yellow and my gums becoming sore from the hard brushing technique that I had adopted in order to tackle the teeth discolouration. When I saw SURI pop up on an Instagram post I was so taken with all I saw and heard that I went ahead and purchased one, and I haven’t looked back. In fact I was so impressed I wrote a full blog review on the SURI – here’s a little taster:
“I can honestly say that this electric toothbrush has worked brilliantly for me. I feel as though my teeth are cleaner, my gums are never sore, the bristles get into every nook and cranny and even my dentist was impressed by the lack of plaque at a recent visit.“
I’ve now been using this brush for 2 years and I actually saw my dentist the other week and again she said how clean my teeth were. Another big bonus for me is the battery length, I don’t have to worry about it always dying and it lasts for a whole holiday meaning I never have to pack the charger. My husband was so impressed by what he was seeing that once his old electric toothbrush had it’s day, he went ahead and got a SURI too (and he is a tough cookie to impress!)
