Our home is often our biggest decision, our biggest expense and the place where we spend most of our time. As such, it makes perfect sense that we would want to invest some of our time and money into it, the challenge can be in deciding how best to do this. For those of us with young families, there is then the thought of the chaos that we would need to manage that can be putting us off starting anything, but fear not as we have got a few ideas for you. Here are our 3 easy ways to add value to your home.

Think about the kerb appeal

Try to look at your home with critical fresh eyes and think about what could be altered or added to improve its kerb appeal.  A lick of exterior paint can work wonders on your home and is likely to be only a day or two’s worth of work. Tidying up an unkempt front lawn instantly improves its appearance. Adding in fresh pots, signs, gates and fences can all make a dramatic difference and do pay attention to your doors, windows and fascias.

Develop your garden

This can be as small or as large a project as you want to take on. It is worth taking the time to develop your garden plans and think both short and long term. A garden needs to be thought of as an additional room in your house and treated as such as you plan to renovate it. A garden is then an ever-evolving project, which can make it a lot of fun to work on. New turf, decking, pathways, outbuildings and planting can all make substantial differences in how you use the space and a well-designed and maintained garden can add real value and saleability to your home. You will be surprised by how quickly plants and shrubs can establish themselves out there, so there is no need to spend on huge specimens, go for seeds, bulbs and plugs to keep costs down and they will be flourishing in no time.

Utilise every space

You want to make all of the space in your homework for you. This might mean converting attics, turning a garage into an extra bedroom, or bathroom remodeling by utilising unused space such as an underused cupboard. You will find that by doing this you are making your home a much more enjoyable and practical place to live in, and you will also be adding value to your house with all of these improvements. Many people may just want to get the project started, but in doing so skip some important areas that can impact timeframe and budget. You can refer to this resource page for more in-depth information on space remodelling to and will serve as your guide in starting your project.

And whilst you are doing all of this, maybe you are investing in more ways than one into your home.

Have you considered that your house could actually be the key to your retirement? As the value goes up and your debt on it reduces, it is becoming something of a savings fund for you in later life. When that time does come, it is worth approaching leading retirement financial advisers to discuss your options and unlock the potential in your home.
