Home projects are so much fun but make sure you are totally prepared with all the tools to get the job done. Whether you’re renovating inside or fixing a small issue the right safety gear is key to not getting hurt and having a safe space.

If you take the time to choose the right safety gear you’ll be protected and have more fun. With the right gear you can chill and focus on the project.

Head and Face

Your head, eyes, ears and respiratory system is at risk during home DIY projects. BPS Depot can help you choose the right gear to protect you from severe injuries from unexpected accidents.

Safety Helmets

Safety helmets are required when you work in areas where objects may fall from above. They are designed to absorb impact forces and prevent head injuries. Choose a helmet that fits snugly on your head and has a suspension system to absorb shock. High density polyethylene materials will ensure your protection gear will last long. Safety helmets come with adjustable straps to fit securely. Check your helmet regularly for cracks or damage and replace if you find any.

Eye Protection

During DIY projects you must protect your eyes especially when using saws or drills. Eye protection gear like safety glasses or goggles will protect your eyes from airborne debris and hazardous substances. Glasses with side shields offer extra protection.

Eyewear with anti-fog and scratch resistant coatings can help keep clear vision. Choose impact resistant products that meet ANSI Z87.1 standards. Tinted lenses can help when working near bright lights or UV radiation. Have eye protection available in your workspace at all times.

Hearing Protection

Long hours of power tools noise can damage your hearing. Earplugs and earmuffs are hearing protection devices that reduce noise exposure. Foam earplugs are comfortable and protective because they mold to your ear shape. Earmuffs are adjustable so they fit snugly and can be worn with helmets. Choose ear protection with high Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) for maximum comfort. Use these protectors for all noisy tasks over time.

Respiratory Protection

Your respiratory system can be harmed by dust particles combined with chemical vapors and airborne fumes. Dust masks and respirators will protect you by preventing harmful substances from entering your lungs. Airborne particle filtration through N95 masks is at least 95%

Use respirators with the right filters for any chemical work. Choose the right size to get a snug fit. Replace masks when they get clogged or wet to maintain effectiveness. Clean and store your respiratory gear properly to keep it effective.

Hand and Arm Safety

Hand and arm protection are especially important during DIY projects. Protective gear like gloves and arm guards will reduce the risk of injury. Choose protection gear with comfort and fit for maximum protection.

Protective Gloves

Protective gloves are barriers to prevent cuts, abrasions and chemical exposure to your hands. Different projects require different types of gloves. Nitrile gloves are good for paint and chemical work but leather gloves are better for cuts. Rubber gloves are good for water or cleaning products tasks.

Choose gloves that fit well and have good grip and dexterity so you can work efficiently without compromising safety. Before using gloves always check them for wear and tear to get maximum protection.

Arm Guards

Arm guards are protective extensions of gloves that protect your arms beyond the glove’s coverage. Arm guards provide extra protection when you handle tools or materials that can scratch or burn your skin. Kevlar sleeves protect against cut hazards because of their cut resistant properties while leather arm guards protect against heat and sparks during welding.

Arm guards should be chosen based on how comfortable they will be for the user. A well fitted arm guard allows for free movement and secure positioning during work. Many products have adjustable closures and elastic bands to fit your skin.

Body Protection

Protective work wear with safety vests will protect your body from dangers and make sure you’re visible.

Protective Clothing

Coveralls will give you full body coverage to protect you from spills, splashes and abrasions. Always choose flame resistant materials when working with heat sources or open flames for burn prevention.

Fit is key. Ill fitting clothing can get caught in tools or machinery. Aprons with pockets help you quickly get to your small tools. This will increase efficiency and safety.

Some jobs require knee pads or elbow guards for kneeling or working with rough materials. Don’t forget comfort. You’ll focus better and get the project done safer when you wear clothes that let you move freely.

Safety Vests

Visibility is important in some work environments so workplace safety vests become a must have. Wearing bright or reflective vests will keep you visible to others so you won’t get into accidents in areas where multiple people share space. LED light equipped vests are for tasks done at night or in dark areas.

Safety vest materials should be able to withstand minor impacts like bumps and scrapes. Choose vests with reinforced padding in areas that are most prone to damage. Vests with extra pockets will allow you to carry essentials hands free while keeping their protective capabilities.

Footwear and Stability

Safety starts from the ground up. Footwear should protect from dangers and people should practice safe ladder and step usage for stability.

Proper footwear minimizes injury from sharp hazards like nails and glass. Steel toed boots are the best protection by being a barrier against heavy objects and sharp items. Choose shoes with slip resistant soles for protection from falls on slippery surfaces or uneven terrain.

Look for footwear made from durable materials that have flexibility and support. Ankle sprains will decrease when you wear shoes with ankle support during movement. Water resistant footwear can help you stay dry and comfortable in all working conditions.

Ladders and Steps

You can prevent falls by using ladders properly to maintain your stability. Place the ladder on solid ground before you start climbing. Always check that the ladder’s weight rating can support your body weight and the heaviest tools you’ll be using.

When using a ladder, the three-point contact rule applies: The three-point contact rule for ladder safety means you should always have three points of contact with the ladder by using two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand. Keep yourself in position when climbing by facing the ladder and don’t overreach.

Ladder safety is maintained by doing regular inspections to check for wear and tear. Ladders with non-slip steps and stabilizers have safer climbing conditions.

Safety First, Always

The foundation of any DIY project is safety. Using safety gear from head to toe and you’ll be able to simply focus on your task at hand.
