Why Electricity Isn’t Always Enough on the Manaslu Trek

Electricity is available at many lodges along the Manaslu trail in Nepal, so carrying a power bank might seem unnecessary. But electricity does not always mean having uninterrupted access to a charging socket. There are power cuts and the sockets fill up quickly. During those times, some Manaslu lodges rely on generators and offer limited charging time in the evening when the regular supply is unavailable.

For anyone doing the Manaslu Circuit trek in Nepal, a power bank comes in very useful. Phones are used for photos, maps, communication, and checking route information, so keeping enough battery for the day is more important than it seems at first.

When the Lights Go Out

Electricity in remote mountain villages can be less predictable than in cities. A lodge may have power at certain times of the day but experience an outage later on.

If the main power is out, some lodges run generators to provide basic electricity. Charging is usually allowed for a short time in the evening, sometimes just an hour. This gives trekkers a chance to recharge, but the time can be limited.

If several guests are staying at the same lodge, that limited period can become busy very quickly. A power bank provides another option when there is no convenient opportunity to plug in a phone.

When Everyone Needs to Charge

Even when electricity is available, charging can be a matter of timing.

A lodge may have only a small number of charging points, while several trekkers need to charge phones, cameras, watches, and other devices. Most people return from the trail around the same time, so demand for sockets tends to increase in the evening.

Instead of waiting for a free socket, trekkers can charge a power bank when electricity is available and use it later. This is particularly useful in busy lodges where everyone is trying to recharge before going to bed.

Keeping Your Phone Alive on the Trail

On a trek, a phone is useful for much more than just making calls.

Trekkers often use their phones to take photos and videos, check maps, contact family or friends, and plan for the next day. Walking for hours often means using your phone on and off throughout the day.

Battery consumption can become even more noticeable when using GPS, frequently taking photographs, or spending long periods outdoors without access to a charger.

Having stored power means a phone does not have to last from one evening charging session to the next.

When the Cold Drains Your Battery

The higher parts of the Manaslu route can get very cold, especially in the early morning and evening. Cold weather can affect how well lithium-ion batteries work, and these are the type found in most smartphones and power banks.

Keeping electronic devices protected from the cold can help, but an additional power source is still useful on long days away from the lodge.

This becomes especially relevant when trekkers are spending several hours outdoors and still have a long distance to walk before reaching the next charging point.

When Extra Power Matters

A power bank is not necessarily carried because electricity is completely unavailable along the Manaslu route. It is carried because access to electricity can vary from one lodge to another and from one day to the next.

Power cuts, short generator hours, too few sockets, or a crowded lodge can all make charging harder than you think. A power bank is a simple backup and does not add much weight to your bag.

For trekkers, that extra battery can mean taking a few more photographs, checking the route, making an important call, or simply avoiding the worry of a phone running low.

That is why a power bank remains useful even when a lodge has electricity. In the mountains, having electricity and having electricity exactly when you need it are not always the same thing.
