SpeedBump Maternity Activewear Review

speedbump activewear worn by me whilst working out. A review

Staying fit and healthy during this pregnancy was something I had decided upon even before I fell with this little guy. I wouldn’t say that my first pregnancy was unhealthy but I wasn’t partaking in any exercise classes and I really did use being pregnant as an excuse to take things easy. This all changed after he was born and I have been actively going to workout classes since Jake was about a year old so my fitness and strength have both increased in the last 3 years. This has meant that since finding out I was expecting with baby number 2 I haven’t had to alter my usual workouts of using kettlebells, Barbells, Bulgarian bags, TRX and other activities within my HIIT classes because my body is used to the level I have been working at. However, as my shape began to change and my bump began to grow I found that trying to find comfortable activewear clothing was a huge challenge. It is always tricky at the start when the bump isn’t quite big enough for over the bump clothing but is too big for normal clothes, isn’t it? There is rarely anything in-between available on the market and I discovered how restricting this can become for those who want to keep fit during their pregnancy.

I started to find that I was spending my workouts fiddling with my clothing– either the band on my trousers was sliding/folding down or it had moved and was pressing into the bump causing me to feel nauseous and my top was riding up and ruffling. I couldn’t concentrate on the moves I needed to do and when I feel uncomfortable I don’t enjoy what I am doing. I had previously looked on the internet but nothing seemed fit for purpose… unless you only want to do pregnancy yoga. I know it may not seem as though many women will be lifting weights and kettlebells during pregnancy but the stigma surrounding lifting is beginning to change and there are some of us out there who are continuing to do so and their needs have to be met.

I was so relieved when I was contacted by SpeedBump Maternity Activewear because it is obvious from their ethos that they are completely aware of what active pregnant women need.

″We understand how much you love sports and want to support you with the best possible maternity activewear so you can keep doing what makes you happy!
Whether you are into Yoga, Running, Cross training or any other sport, our high performance maternity activewear for pregnant athletes will support your active pregnancy and make sure you do not have to compromise on functionality or style.″

Their designs, which are made in the UK, take into consideration the growth of your bump, the movements you will have to perform and your comfort, which is incredibly important when you are working out.

As you can see from above, the leggings have the over the bump feature but this can also be worn turned down for when you are early on in your pregnancy. I am about 20 weeks pregnant here and the over the bump material stayed up and remained in place during every workout without being tight. As your baby grows the leggings adapt to your size and needs which you can also feel rest assured will not go see-through as they stretch due to the type of fabrics used. They even have breathable mesh strategically placed to keep you cool and comfortable during your workout. The racer top is also designed to grow and support your bump; it is cut slightly longer in the front so you will always be covered even as your bump expands. It is also made from the same sweat-wicking material as the leggings and both will retain their shape so can be used postpartum.

Our purpose:
″To offer functional and stylish maternity activewear, helping women to feel great and supporting them in staying fit and healthy throughout their active pregnancy″

I’ve been wearing these for the last 3 weeks at all of my workout classes and I can honestly say that both are the most comfortable workout clothes I have ever worn. You can feel that they have been well thought out, designed and made and that this company completely understands that pregnancy exercise can be just the same as pre-pregnancy exercise.

″We believe you should expect more from your gear when you are pregnant and not less! Therefore we only produce maternity sportswear of the highest quality and functionality.″

During all of these types of workouts I haven’t had to stop to rearrange my outfit, I haven’t felt wet from sweat and there are no seams within the material to cause issues. The range consists of the leggings priced at £84, racer top which is £54, a maternity tee at £58 and maternity shorts for £64 all of which come in other colour options. All of which are a worthwhile investment if you are planning to workout throughout your pregnancy and after.

  1. These look really comfortable – glad you found something that works for you and your fitness #TriumphantTales

  2. I was not very good with my exercise when pregnant with Ben (to be honest I’m never any good usually) but perhaps next time round I’ll be better and actually get a decent body!
Thank you for sharing this with us at #TriumphantTales. I hope to see you back next week.

    1. Yeah it’s definitely a tough one to try and fit in and think about doing but once you do you feel so much better for it. I can feel I am fitter this time around.
