Dear son,

This week was a biggie. We found out your school place and even though the build-up has been coming for months, I wasn’t expecting to feel this way. When we viewed the schools I was excited for something new but over the weekend I had a sinking feeling begin to grow in the pit of my stomach and as soon as I scanned my eyes over that long-awaited email I felt sad.

It is that time of year when parents are stepping into unknown territory, checking out school websites, working out if catchments areas mean anything anymore and questioning which school will be the best for their darling child. The difference this year is that this directly affects me too! I have already seen the lists of open days, been asked where he is going by family members and mentally debated with myself over not putting down our catchment school as an option. The thing is none of us first-timers really know what we are supposed to be doing.

Back in the day, when I was at school, you were there to learn and this meant the classes were usually pretty serious. I always did well in the interactive classes– Music, Science, English– but I struggled with Maths from the start. For me, it was always explained in a very complicated way. If I can relate information I am given to practical situations and it seems logical to me I can take it all in and learn and perhaps if it had all been made more fun I may have been much more engaged. It wasn’t until I failed my Maths GCSE and had to re-do a year at college that I found a teacher who finally made it all ‘click’.
