My blog is my business so it seems only right to have a category to cover this. I began my journey of writing by writing my book which led to my blog and I love to share tips and experiences I have learnt along the way. I think it is important to share these because we were all at the beginning once, with no clue, no idea how to do certain tasks and being able to rely on others’ expertise can be invaluable. I have learnt so much since my blog became my business, there are so many things I wish I’d known three years ago but if it means I can now help others I’m glad I can jot these things down to help. I cover topics on writing, blogging, self-publishing and working from home.

Most advice on how to make money with blogging quietly assumes one thing. That you have all day to do it. Post daily. Be on every platform. Spend hours on SEO, emails, and Pinterest. It is fine advice for someone with forty empty hours a week.

You have nap time, the school run, and ten minutes before bed.

You do not need more hours. You need a focused approach and income that keeps working while you are wiping noses and packing lunchboxes. Blogging can absolutely pay, as long as you go in with a realistic plan instead of a dream of overnight riches.

For years, I did what most bloggers do when they’re starting out. I used a free Gmail account for everything from brand emails and PR enquiries to reader messages. It worked, in the sense that emails arrived and I replied to them. But somewhere along the way I started noticing how it looked, and more importantly, what it was actually doing with my data.

The switch to a custom email domain wasn’t something I rushed into. I thought about it for longer than I’d like to admit. But once I made the move, it changed things in ways I hadn’t entirely expected — and I want to share those honestly, because I think a lot of bloggers are in the same position I was.
