All You Need To Know About Using A Menstrual Cup

Plastic-free periods have been taking the spotlight in the last few years and having several choices now means that every period can be more comfortable, more affordable in the long run and better for your health as well as for the environment. The three options that are currently available to use are cloth sanitary pads (CSP), period pants and the menstrual cup. All three can be used, washed and reused. You can choose just one, you may want to choose two options or you can mix it up and go for all three. For example, on heavier days you may feel better wearing a period pant as you get that all round protection, at night you may like CSP and for swimming the menstrual cup may be your go to plastic-free period product. The joy of having all of these is that you can choose what will work for you.

Having a comfortable period is something that is at the top of every person’s list. We all know that ‘that time of the month’ can bring PMS symptoms, aches, migraines, cramps and so on so the last thing anybody wants is to feel a bit yucky down below. Having used disposable menstrual products over many, many years (because I had no idea that reusables existed!) I know firsthand how disposable pads can make your periods heavier, how they can be smelly, can make your sweat, can move and lead to leaks and how the costs mount up. Thankfully, there are so many options available to us today

3 Ways To Have A Plastic-Free Period

When I discovered that the majority of period products available on the market contain plastic I was shocked. I mean, I had been using these essential items since the age of 11/12 and never once had I wondered what they were made from, what was added to them or what chemicals they contained. Why would I? We are sold these products on adverts and in magazines, we are told we need them, we are shown a variety of disposable options and told over and over ‘This one is the best!’ What nobody ever told me was that there were other choices. More eco-friendly choices. Options with no waste, no monthly purchase, no chemicals or perfumes and no plastic. I found this all out at the age of 35 and not via the media or family or friends. It was from eco accounts on Instagram. If it could have done, my jaw would have hit the ground. I mean, for starters, how much have I spent on single-use period products in 23 years?

Making The Switch To Cloth Sanitary Pads

I started my periods way back when I was around 11/12 and yet what has recently astounded me is that I have gone around for the last 25 years or so not knowing that cloth sanitary pads were a thing. I have spent how much?! Oh, god, I don’t want to know, just imagine… I may cry, I may actually cry, PLUS I have sent god knows how much plastic, chemical-filled waste to landfill or incineration (pass the bucket). I honestly not only feel sick from all of this but I also feel completely and utterly cheated. Continue reading “Making The Switch To Cloth Sanitary Pads”
