Having a comfortable period is something that is at the top of every person’s list. We all know that ‘that time of the month’ can bring PMS symptoms, aches, migraines, cramps and so on so the last thing anybody wants is to feel a bit yucky down below. Having used disposable menstrual products over many, many years (because I had no idea that reusables existed!) I know firsthand how disposable pads can make your periods heavier, how they can be smelly, can make your sweat, can move and lead to leaks and how the costs mount up. Thankfully, there are so many options available to us today

and I am really happy using a combination of reusables pads, period pants and a menstrual cup, so much so that I keep shouting about it all across my social media channels. I just feel that these products are a real revolution and that everyone should always have a manageable period, not a difficult one. It’s hard enough having a period every single month with some symptoms causing us to have more bad weeks than good, we need to have comfort during this time, we need to feel as though we are fully protected and that we can carry on with our day to day lives with ease and one of the best ways to feel completely normal during this time is to use period pants. I have been using WUKA period pants for around 6 months now so I thought I would write a review to let you know how they have performed.

Who Are WUKA?

WUKA stands for Wake Up Kick Ass because this is precisely what everybody should be able to do during their period. The brand was founded by Ruby (CEO) who is a passionate environmental scientist and Dave (CPO) who has over 20 years experience in product design. They wanted to bring something different to market, something that made a period feel normal, that would be comfortable and also eco-friendly (all black underwear is now GOTs Certified Organic Cotton). WUKA now has a large range of reusable period pants which cover a variety of flows, sizes, pants for teens, swim pants, cycle pants as well as also the addition of products such as bralettes, hot water bottles and wash bags.

How does it work? I ask you say. Well, this is what WUKA say…

The Inner / Outer fabrics are made of soft, breathable, moisture-wicking and luxurious Lenzing ® MicroModal fabric. The inner layer of our fabric has antibacterial properties. This helps to prevent odour and bacterial growth

Central layers include an absorbent layer that is uniquely used in our underwear that absorbs blood and interlocks it and the PUL protects against leaks.

WUKA Review

I received one pair of the WUKA pants in a medium flow as part of an Instagram campaign back in March 2020. Since then I have used them for every period so I have much more experience with them now.

First Impressions

On first impressions I thought the material felt really good quality, it was nice and thick and the built-in pad felt as though it would definitely hold up to the job.

Fit

Now, I opted for small as I followed the guide which stated that clothes size 8-10 is a small but I did find them a little tight around my thighs and waist. I know that this is to ensure that you are protected from leaks but it was just a bit too snug for me– they have since given a bit but I think in future I would opt for a medium. In terms of coverage, they are a full brief so they provide plenty of support across all of the areas and do not move or lose shape.

Using The Period Pants

I have used the period pants on a variety of days across my times of the month (i.e. heavier start to lighter end) and each time I have been comfortable, the blood has been wicked away by the pad, I haven’t had any leaks or smells and I often forget I am even on! I think the main benefit of using pants is the fact that it feels the same as the rest of the month. You don’t have to fiddle around with any extra products, you don’t feel as though there is really anything down there and because the pants feel nice, you still feel like you.

My period has been far lighter since using reusable period products which has also been a huge plus for me as I have always had heavy, painful periods since I first started at the age of 12. Having natural materials next to you and avoiding chemicals and bleach has a positive effect on how your body reacts during menstruation and I rarely have cramps now either.

Washing

Once worn, you should ideally take your pants and give them a hand rinse under the cold tap to remove the majority of the blood and to prevent staining. They can then be added to your washing machine. Now, if you follow my blog you will know that I love reusables and I am a huge cloth nappy fan. We have been using these with my second child since he was 6 months along with reusable wipes which means I am very used to having more washing to do and I am used to putting messy items in my machine. I know that washing your period blood out in your washing machine can seem daunting to some of you but honestly, it is so simple, the machine does its job and it doesn’t leave any mess or stains. Your pants will come out clean as will anything you put them in with. I usually add mine to a towel wash on a 40 with powder, no fabric conditioner as this will affect absorbency and they wash perfectly.

Drying

The period pants cannot be tumble dried but they don’t take long to dry in the home or out on the line. They obviously have the extra padding which will take longer to dry than your normal underwear but as long as you have enough pairs to cover you or if you have other reusable options (CSP for example) then it shouldn’t cause any problems.

Price

The WUKA period pants vary in price according to your period flow. The medium flow pants I received are priced from £12.00 whereas the heavy flow pants are £18.00 as are the tween pants. This may seem a little pricey at first but you do have to remember that a reusable product is an investment. If you purchase enough to see you through each month, you will no longer have to spend out on disposable products and these will last you for many years to come. Did you know that one study has found that the average person who menstruates will spend around £10.24 per month on disposable menstrual products which can add up to around £4,916 during an average reproductive lifetime (12 to 52)? So if you had to spend £100 just once for the rest of your menstruating time you would actually be saving yourself thousands! And of course, no one is saying that you have to do it all at once, you can buy what you can afford to begin with and then build on your collection over the course of a year or so. Once you have enough you can simply do away with disposable and enjoy a fully eco-friendly, reusable period product.
