My eco topics category is my latest addition to my blog. I decided to make changes to my lifestyle in 2018 because I knew we needed to take steps to become more eco-friendly. It began with the change to reusable nappies and wipes and from there I made a promise to continue to try and find other ways to improve our wasteful ways and at the same time offer up tips, advice and hopefully inspire others.

Making these changes has had such a positive impact on us as a family. We are enjoying finding new ways of doing things, we love talking about it with others and we are saving money too! Such a win! Eco topics are now a huge passion of mine and I hope you will enjoy them as much as we are.

With Christmas just around the corner, you may already be thinking about those presents, the decorations, how much food you will need to buy and which family will be hosting. It’s a big day and it can take a lot of planning BUT is it too big? Has Christmas got out of hand? Do we need to start reining it all in? Do we need to consider our waste and consumption now that we are very aware of the overuse of plastic and climate change? Looking at current figures I’d say so! It has been reported that in the UK alone we create 30% more waste than usual during the festive period, which includes two million turkeys and six million Christmas trees plus 1 billion Christmas cards!!

Starting out with cloth nappies can seem daunting for quite a few reasons and one that comes up most often (other than washing) is the initial set-up cost. Yep, I get that. When I first started looking at cloth I did what most people do and gasped at some of the prices. I wondered how on earth I’d be able to afford to buy enough to use cloth full-time and worried that I would spend out lots of money only for it not to work for us. On my ever-growing quest to find more ways in which to be more eco-friendly, I hadn’t even considered the coffee pods that my husband was using in his new Nespresso machine. It’s amazing where plastic can lurk and even though they do offer a recycling service I am always a little sceptical about these things as the energy used to recycle, the carbon emissions created by delivery and collection all seem to outweigh the good that you think you are doing. I recently attended a blogging conference where I was fortunate enough to speak to lots of different brands and see some of their new products that are coming or have just come to market. One brand which I have previously worked with on a Toy Story Puzzle Review, Jumbo Games, was there and as I am a big fan of getting my children into playing games and away from the electronics, I am always eager to see what they have come up with. They did not disappoint! As soon as I mentioned that my blog had taken more of an eco angle, the PR was right on it and he presented me with this beautiful collection of games in cardboard boxes. Where Is The Love? For Our Planet and For Others…?

Just recently as I have sat and heard the news of all that people are trying to do to raise awareness of climate change, as I have scrolled through Instagram seeing those that I follow make eco-swap after eco-swap and as I have read yet another passionate talk from Greta Thunberg, my heart has been filled with pride. Proud that at long last, people are standing up for our planet, that people are trying no matter how small a change it is and that the next generation are going to be the changers for this world but there’s a but… Urgh, I know! Where there is positivity, negativity seems to somehow follow.
