Maternity Wear: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

*Gifted Product

I have such a love-hate relationship with maternity wear. Don’t you find that there is such a gap in the market? We start to gain water and weight from before 12 weeks yet all the maternity wear is aimed at the size you are from around 7 months. Nothing fits from your normal wardrobe and you end up traipsing the shops for the very limited range of maternity clothes available to you. ‘Oh you can buy it online’ you hear time and time again but I don’t always want to buy online, I want to go into a shop, look at the sizes and try them on! And why are the styles mostly floaty, high necked, v-necked and with unflattering cut sleeves? Pregnant women are still the same people and even though their bodies change their tastes and fashion sense don’t; we want to feel like us as much as we can!

How Pregnancy Brings on a Whole New Wave of Mum Guilt

As if we need to feel more Mum guilt eh… Who’d have thought that pregnancy could bring on a whole new wave of it?! Well, it can and it has for me.

The first trimester wasn’t too bad. I was being physically sick and everyone could see the toll it was taking on me. I was off so many foods, I couldn’t keep much down and I could barely stay awake. Jake had twigged that I was pregnant before we even told him and he took on a good

My Pregnancy: The Second Trimester

This trimester has felt long. What makes it feel even longer is the fact that no one can decide precisely when this one ends and the third begins! Seriously, my book and Bounty tells me week 26, NHS says 27 and other people say week 28 so I have given up guessing and am bringing this update to you around a time when I feel that I am getting bigger and things have definitely moved on.

My Pregnancy: Birth Reflections Meeting

When I had Jake on Christmas Day 2013 it ended in a very traumatic emergency c-section which affected me for quite a while after. I wasn’t offered any extra help afterwards, any counselling or explanations about what happened. All I had to go on was what I could vaguely remember from my time in the hospital and the bits that my husband relayed back. It was a long, exhausting labour and when you have been pulled and prodded, checked and injected, seen countless faces and gone through an epidural and a spinal block, then surgery everything becomes a blur and the facts and details are lost.

why exercise during pregnancy is important

Why Exercise During Pregnancy Is Important

Gone are the days of taking it easy, sitting back with your feet up and eating for two… New research shows that none of this is good for either Mother or baby. I probably did way too much of all of this during my first pregnancy which led to weight gain and a longer recovery from my emergency c-section. I found that my lack of strength really had a knock-on effect on my energy levels, on my core returning to its original state and I was at the heaviest I had ever been. It took me around a year to feel able to return to exercise after an unsuccessful attempt at 6 months which would lead to severe abdominal pain after each class for a few days after. I just wasn’t ready.

speedbump activewear worn by me whilst working out. A review

SpeedBump Maternity Activewear Review

*Gifted Items

Staying fit and healthy during this pregnancy was something I had decided upon even before I fell with this little guy. I wouldn’t say that my first pregnancy was unhealthy but I wasn’t partaking in any exercise classes and I really did use being pregnant as an excuse to take things easy. This all changed after he was born and I have been actively going to workout classes since Jake was about a year old so my fitness and strength have both increased in the last 3 years. This has meant that since finding out I was expecting with baby number 2 I haven’t had to alter my usual workouts of using kettlebells, Barbells, Bulgarian bags, TRX and other activities within my HIIT classes because my body is used to the level I have been working at. However, as my shape began to change and my bump began to grow I found that trying to find comfortable activewear clothing was a huge challenge. It is always tricky at the start when the bump isn’t quite big enough for over the bump clothing but is too big for normal clothes, isn’t it? There is rarely anything in-between available on the market and I discovered how restricting this can become for those who want to keep fit during their pregnancy.
